Fuel Guage problem

Fuel guage is powered by a switch on the dash.
The wires running to the guage are pink, purple, black, and blue. Black was hooked to ground, blue is for the guage light. Purple goes to a terminal labled "I", and pink goes to a terminal labled "S". When no juice is flowing to it, the guage sits on 1/4. When I turn the switch on, the guage pegs to the left (0/4). I tried switching the pink and purple wires, but it does the same thing. Could this be a problem with the guage itself? How can i test the guage, now that i've pulle it out of the dash and disconnected the wires running to it?

I have a problem with my fuel guage also, when filling at the pump, the dollars keep going up and up 60, 70, 80 and finally full

, seriously now, the fuel guage switch on my dash is just for the light is it different on yours ?

the pink wire should be the send (s) on the sender, as well as the (s) on the guage, the purple wire is (+) also denoted by the letter (i) means the power is comming from the key switch, your black wire is ground, and your blue wire is for the light in the guage.. this is a description of what the wires are supposed to do, and an aid for diagnostics... should you find something quirkey in the wiring... wire it to code and see what happens.. no telling what some wiring fool did under the dash..

I had the same problem and it ended up being the ground for the tank...check and or run a new wire for the tank ground...as the negative on the sending unit grounds thru the tank when screwed down...at least thats what took care of my problem...worth a try..just use a jumper wire with clips to try it and see

Your gauge sounds like it is working because it is moving when you get power. Check your sending unit. Did your tank sit empty for a time? Your float could be stuck to the bottom of the tank.
