HELLO EVERYONE

New member
New member for about a month now, 1st thread. I picked up a 92 persuader I/O 350 mag, block is cracked, process of pulling it out and rebuilding it over the winter, starting with a NEW 350 block, rings and bearings. I'm also getting the crank balanced, and I'll go from there, thinking about vortec heads and intake, always a outboard guy, 1st inboard. Does anyone have opinion or experience, with that setup? Cam? roller maybe, I'll know mor when we start pulling the motor apart. I'm looking to get around 350 hp. Thanks, LT video of the cracked motor is on you tube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2fBjEGQaJc

Watch what pistons you use if you go with vortec heads. They will raise your compression quite a bit. I built one about 7 years ago for a 19' Baja:sick:. Had to run 93 octane with the time retarded way to far to get the true potentiel out of the motor. What little bit I did get to play with it, the motor was awsome. I can't hardly remember yesterday and that was a long time ago. So I can't tell you all of the details, but the combustion chambers on the vortec heads are much smaller. Good luck. boatman

Roller cam is always the best way to go. It all depends on how much you want to spend but a good hyd. cam will work fine. A good reliable bottom end should have a steele crank forged pistons and good rods or have your stock rods shot peened. I would buy new heads like you stated. Small block stuff is cheap now for a 350. Just watch on some after market heads the exhaust ports are in a different location than a factory head. World products makes a good way afforable complete head set up for small blocks. Be very carful with your cam size if you run to big of a cam you will get "reversion" sucking water back into the engine from the overlap on big cams. When a cam is to big dry exhaust is needed.

You are in the perfect situation to build a 383. I would check into either a Scat or Eagle rotating assembly. They even offer them allready balanced. My personal prefference would be the Eagle kit because they use Speed Pro pistons rather than the Keith Blacks in the Scat kits. Also use a one piece rear main block set-up for a factory roller cam (wich is the block your boat probably had). This way you can run a roller cam witout having to buy the more expensive retro fit lifters. The vortec heads are a good choice, topped with an RPM Air gap intake. You should also look at the GLM aluminum exhaust manifolds for this. They have seperate runners and are not that expensive. As far as a cam, figure out what you do most of the time, (ski, tube, cruise). I wouldn't go over .500 lift with a 112 lobe sep. I have built a few engine with this combo and they dyno out about 430- 460 HP, with a ton of torque. Just my opinion, hope this helps.

350 build

Thanks for useful info guys, I would love to build a 383, but I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as possible. I want to do the bottom end of the motor right. so I have to start out with a new block, if my boat does have a roller cam in , whnt could I reuse to keep money low , if you seen the video , you know I have to buy a exhaust manifolds already. I was looking at the GLMs for around $600. Could I use my intake and heads on a 383 short block setup, and say replace them next year? My brother in-law is the mechanic, he would love for us to build 383, but I also have a alpha drive so what I've been reading 400hp is around max with that drive. I have a alot of options. thanks LT

Hey Hobie, I'm in Florence, below Trenton on the delaware. The river bout a mile for my house. I go between philly and trenton on the water, hang in a couple of coves on the pennsy side. My family has a house in Gilford park near Toms River and I sometimes go there in the summer to boat. Toms can get pretty crowded in the summer. Thanks, LT

you will have to come 30 miles south, try the Mullica river ,never crowded always calm..There is abut 6 checkmates running that river..

you guys cracking on the Mullica????Actually there is no speed limit, which surprised me,and only hit one log once,,but I was way up river in 2 feet of water...going very slow...

Instead of heading south on vacation,I think they need to come up north to my favorite Canadian waters and enjoy some (one) of the relaxed laws those canooks have. I'll even share my floaty.:eyecrazy:
