How to: Pull bbc

Any shops near you with a gantry or forklift? You could disconnect almost everything and tow to a shop for them to lift it out for you.

Check with your local tool rental. I was lucky to rent a heavy equipment oversized cherry picker for $30 2 miles down the road. You never know . It worked great and just hook to hitch and pull it home.

Not sure if it was just me, but I found the engine has to be turned 90 degrees once you start to lift it out to fit through the hatch opening. I ended up having to take one exhaust manifold off as well to make things much easier. I found that out the hard way. Should have just removed the exhaust from the start and been done with it.

Not sure how wide opening is on a 251. I know on my 253 I have to lift it about a foot to clear the Bell housing over the steering cylinder on transom assy at which point the front lip of engine compartment becomes a problem. I have somebody pull boat ahead about 5-6 inches and it will finish lifting rest of way out straight with a few mild twists to clear power steering pulley hub then the dipstick tube.

I wish it would only take me two hours.

I'm pretty good with cars but I can see taking one out taking me a good weekend. And then there's finding the weekend to spend on it. I guess when you've done it a few times it's easier. Plus being a fat guy in not sure I can reach everything behind the motor without learning some serc De solei stuff lol

I guess im just worried about the lifting it out part.
I guess hold my beer and watch this shouldn't apply huh?

That was on a 251. It is tight. I should have also mentioned its so much easier after you remove the hatch to take the top and bottom half of the rear seat out. That will give you room and then your not worried about damaging the seat anyway.

PULLING THE ENGINE

Hey Kieth what do you plan to use to pull the engine? RNGRDVE knows what he is talking about along with the other Guys you will need a Gantry that is tall enough and wide enough to get the engine out of the boat and wide enough to get the trailer under. You can use a fork Lift if the forks are long enough or a tow truck with a boom. If I was closer I would give you a hand. Good Luck let us know how you make out Have a Happy Thanksgiving You and the rest of the Members.

I'll be looking for a hoist. if I can't find one i have a fork lift at work.
Your only what 10 hrs away. i'll buy the beer and we can go out after where done. lol

I use a setup something like you described, pulled many engines from boats, 251, 253, etc, have 4 4x4's laying on the trusses, 2 6x6's across those, chain to hoist, works great. you boat, remove hatch, unplug round elec plug, fuel line and plug, remove drive, you have 2 bolts from bell housing to transom mount(watch these parts after removal, spring/fibre washers), P/S lines, engine mount bolts, cables etc...lift strait up and turn to side to clear...
