Info on Pulse 186 --> max power, best match?

I personaly would go with the yamaha 225. I have one and cant say enuff about it for being reliable. Also I like that fact that everyone seems to asume becouse its not a merc its not going to be fast, my yamaha pushes my starflite to 74.3 as of now. IM in search of 80 this summer with and extensive rebuild from Ray Neudecker. I assume all the motors that your looing at are 20"? If there not all, I would only get the one thats is a 20". Ask just about anyone thats owned a yamaha if they'd own another im sure ya will find a couple that might go with a merc but I almost guarentee not many will have bad things to say bout the yammies. I know for fact the barefoot warrior with a 225 merc I past that had 2 guys while I had 4 in my boat this summer was a bit surprised. Good luck. Aaron

thanks for the responses

Got a note from my insurance company stating that in their opinion all the damages on the Yammie are my problem :yell::pissed::irked::pissed::yell::brickwall: :irked: :brickwall:
Although I am obviously going to fight that statement:brickwall:it leaves me with very little cash and a desperate need to out on the water....

anybody know anything about the Merc. 220EFI? (it's really cheap) (on the cowling it definitely says 220 EFI. It looks a bit like an old 2L XR2

learned the 225 yammie is available now but it has got a very big pricetag on it. (with the help of the insurance that wouldn't have been a major problem but now...)

I have a 2.5 175 mariner on my 186 pulse.... The previous owner topped out at 70mph by himself in it!

If your looking for a motor to run your pulse in the 80's with 4 people in the boat.... stay away from anything under 200hp!

I am upgrading to a 2.5 260 drag set up with 8" of set back!

Thanks for your response. Those are numbers i'd really like to match!
When do you expect to get some results with the 2.5 260?

I am hoping to end up in between 200 and 250. So that sounds promising.

Did the previous owner of your puls already have 8" of setback with the 175?

Thanks Tom

I run a 175efi mariner mag and run low 70's. a friend of mine jkeiper on this site runs a 175 efi merc (slightly tweaked ) that he wont tell me everything he has done to it but it runs with the 2100's and 225 promax's with no problem. Mid to upper 70's gps. Like everybody else says, set up is the key.

that setup is what I'm looking for. big lack of info missing in that area.

for example setbacks up here in the NL are not really widely used (I have a 5") and one usually won't see them apart from on real racers. In various other posts on this forum I see you guys use 8" and more, just read about wildman who had a 12" (bigger boat though) .

I'm being told I'm mad :eyecrazy: :brickwall:when I say my checky should go over 62.5MPH with a 200HP. But damn you guys are talking mid 70MPH + (GPS)

I run 6" of setback a 23 laser 2 (I ont like the prop) top three holes in the lower unit plugged and right now running the prop shaft 4-4 1/2" below the pad (it will be raised again this spring to 3-3 1/2 after I replace the water pump and add water scoops. jkeiper runs 6" of set back a labbed 23 tepest and a 25 labbed tempest motor jacked almost to the top and with the tempest is always against the rev limter.

What RPM and what gear ratio do you run?

I dont know what gear ratio I have but at 70 (speedo) I run about 6000.
I also dont Know what ratio jkeiper has but he was constantly hitting the rev limiter with his 23 tempest so he moved up to a 25. If you want to talk to someone who knows how to make a pulse fly, talk to Jim.

25 inch shaft

Stick with a 20 inch motor.Tom is correct about the set back and requiring less motor height. The taller engine would create problems in high speed handling and mainly going into turns. Also,it would put more undo stress on the transom. The 225 would be a good choice. If you go with less, you'll regret it in the future.Thats been my experience.
JBS 23 outboard/300 omc

Do I understand you correctly if I say you wouldn't put less than 225 on it but also not too much more?

sounds great:cheers:drool::drool:

would JBS be Jim ?

Do I understand correctly that 5-6" be sufficient setback on a 186 pulse?
(have the normal CMC 5" setback/man lift. so other than changing the height I wouldn't need to alter anything there?)

Hey Tom. I'm watching this thread intently! I think I'm going to run my GT175 this year and work on my setup and driving. Going to try to get to know the hull really well. Next year I may upgrade. I don't know about you. but I want to keep the all around useability of a family boat... I don't want to hang race motor back there. I've been really impressed with the E-Tec's. I'm waiting to see what you run though :bounce: Maybe a 200 or 225?
My goal is to have a fully functional family boat for tubing, skiing, etc... while still being able to sprint to 80+ when the urge arises :sssh:

I have found a 2.4efi bp. would possibly go up to 245hp. but it's not clear yet if it's 100% oke. Trying to do the same you do (my girlfriend and dog don't mind going fast but not all the time and not constantly 70MPH+. But budget will not allow for a 225HO Etec, 250HPDI Vmax or 225 (250XS:drool: ) Optimax which would be very nice as well (understatement of the year I would say).
I will keep you up to date on how it goes.

No, not the same Jim. jkeiper used to be on here all the time. I think he has been pretty preoccupied with trying to buy a business. Send him a personal message if you want he is very good at making these pulse's fly. Also I agree that it takes seat time to learn how to drive your boat to get to the speed you want. I have run jkeipers boat and a 2100 from Roberts Marine and I couldnt go as fast as they did.

2.5EFI on pulse 186

I have been offered the following engine
0hrs rebuilded Merc 2.5efi 280, 1:1,87, offshore midsection, 300 drag pistons.

Any idea if this amount of power works on a Pulse186 or that it simply is too much? (it's only 18,6ft..... (is it structurally strong enough  and will it be any fun to drive?).

Any advice appreciated.
