Intake & Carb replacement

Don's89 Senator

Well-known member
Here's one for you.. I have a 89 Senator 350 engine.. I can't keep well enough alone.. I'd like to up grade my carb and intake ( Carb has BAD hesitation ).. I know My hatch won't let me do a high rise intake.. Is there a nice carb/intake I could buy that will fit under my hatch?? I would like a demon or holly carb with a good intake.. And a low profile spark resister to match?? What size carb?? I'm a motor head and looking for an edge..Where do I find performance parts for Checks.. Give it hell people..And how about Headers... I saw some nice ones in Gallery. Let's blow the out drive off.. He He !! Just joking..:thumb:
Thanks ( needs more power ) Don

The sundeck on my Glassmaster was pretty much on top of the original 2 barrel Rochester set up. I went with a Weiand 8004 (dual plane low rise aluminum) and an Edelbrock carb (since I had the carb on the shelf). I didn't really give up any clearance with that set up. I figured if I needed a little more room I would pull the upholstery off the panel, cut a hole with a jig saw and then lay a piece of stainless or aluminum over the hole from the top, screw it down, and then put the upholstery back on. That would have given me the 3/4" that was the wood that I cut out and I doubt you'd notice the 1/8" piece of metal under the foam.

If its a stock 350 I would go with a edelbrock dual-plane intake. The performer,, its good from idle to 5500. I am not a fan of Edelbrock crabs unless I am selling what I put it on. On a stock 350 I would use a Holley 600 double pumper but if I was going to hop up the engine more later I would get the 650-700 and jet it down for now.

A low profile marine flame arrestor will do nothing but choke the air flow down and your upgrades will be useless.

Not a fan of the demon carbs anymore after they started mass producing them. Seems like 1 out of 5 are messed up. Had my eye on some proform stuff but never used one. I have used a crap load of the proform centers made for a Holley and love them.

if you can get a performer RPM under there, that would be a great intake..a 650DP holley should work well...have to be carefull of a restrictive flame arrester like Red said...

I have an Edelbrock 750 that has maybe 5-7 hours on it that I can sell you. Since I am replacing my engine and going MPI, I need to sell this since it is now a waste.

Let me know if you have any interest.

Thanks guys for input.. Is the Performer a low rise?? As to hatch,, It has a 1/4" ply all ready.. 750 Carb is to big.. Thanks NC22.. NC,, my boat came for Northern NJ. I'm thinking of 650 cfm. I was thinking of Flipping ( interior and shinning up ) the boat to buy a 24-25' Checkmate later.. Or keep it.. I'd like to hit 70mph. and change prop to 23p ( now 21p ).. As for spark arrestor.. Is there after market?? I see some in pics or is that a bad idea...
Thanks again Don :poke:

The performer is a low rise good to 5500 rpms the performer RPM is not a low rise and the rpm range is 1500-6500

You can use a K&N marine approved air filter with a drop base 1-3/8" above the carb air cleaner flange, no restriction and you can use the Performer RPM, The dual plane performers work good too.
650 dbl pumper will work good.
I sell K&N

Any chance you bought the boat off of an add from Craigs List and the boat was docked at Lake Hopatcong? I looked at that boat before I bought my Senator....

I was thinking of the K&N.. What's the price?? So you think all that will all fit under my Senator hatch?? I like the K&N products.. Have a cold air on my 87 stang.. What intake do you like??
Thanks for the input Don :bigthumb:

The boat ( So I was told ) went from Jersey to Watertown, NY then to Alb. area... The reg was still NJ.. It's mostly white & Black with some red.. Seat were cracked / wiring cut up..I bought it off Craig in Alb. This guy buys/ strips stuff like 2nd battery. But I still wanted it..
Thanks Don

You will have to measure to make sure but it should make up the difference of the hi rise.
$135.00 with the drop base. here's a picture of one on a big blocks we rigged. we used it so we could raise the transom cut out to raise the X dimension as high as it would go without putting a scoop in the hatch. The hatch would not close with out it and still has 1" clearance It's not like a cold air intake, it's like a air cleaner but coast guard approved.

Do the carbs that everyone has recommended have to be marine (i assume they do)? I'm looking to do a carb/intake upgrade on my stock 350 also.
