Is motor to big for my boat?

I have a 19 ft checkmate and I want to put a 1996 Johnson 225 hp outboard on it. Will this sink or damage my boat?

Only thing it will make it do is run like a raped ape!!! You might want to be sure your transom is in good shape, but other than that, you should be good!! I know ndaniels on here ran a similar motor on his 18ft exciter. I'm pretty sure he ran close to 80.

I've got basically the same engine on my 18-1/2 foot Eluder. It weighs somewhere around 450 pounds, so as already mentioned make darned sure the transom is solid, and at a minimum use dual cable steering.

Pleasejust be careful. I can see you just joined here and I have no idea what kind of experience you have driving a fast and small outboard powered but but things can go really wrong really fast. Not trying to doubt your abilities but even with 25 years of driving my 50mph 18ft runabout its taking some time to get a handle on my 21ft Starliner with a 200hp that "only" goes 64mph. Just be careful and take baby steps, especially since I am guessing you will be hanging more motor on the back than the boat is rated for.

I have been boating for a long time, I am running a150 hp blackmax right now that tops out at 52 on gps, but you're right, I just want to know I can go that fast, but not necessarily do it

Solid mota mounts and tight dual cable steering will go along way in enjoying the boat. (Jackplate too)

Look Ma No Hands

To Much Horse Power is just right !! Take the advice of Groundloop & Merc245 and you might live to tell your grandkids about how fast your boat would fly.

It comes with a jackplate, but if I put that on, won't that be hard on my transom? Would I be better off with the blackmax 150 or the other one?

Sell the black max 150. Use that money to buy the parts to convert the johnson to a 20". Put the Johnson on WITH the jackplate........... WALA!!!! You now have a pretty sweet ass boat!!!

The 25" shaft will raise the motor 5" higher than with the 20". It will change your center of gravity and make the boat handle wrong. You do not want that motor hanging up that high.

You're fine with the jack plate, AS LONG AS THE TRANSOM IS SOLID. Yes, hanging a heavy engine on a jackplate puts more stress on the transom, but Checkmates have very strong transoms and can handle it. And I believe that even with the jackplate a 25 inch engine would have too much of the lower unit hanging in the water (not to mention the higher CG as YF already mentioned).

I'm sure that would be a nice nice performing boat with the 150 as well. Which model Check do you have, by the way, and what's the suggested max HP rating (that plate is just a suggestion, right? :D )

my boat is an exciter and its in great shape i love it .sorry it took me so long to write back. thanks for all the help.i am lost when it comes to this stuff:D
