Jackets are a GO ! Post your size and quantity again here

Bigmoss,

The original thread went on for quite a bit before the price or the details of the jacket were even determined. Why people were posting that they would take one....two.....three jackets, before they even knew what they were agreeing to purchase, or how much they were agreeing to spend, I can't explain. But if you read the original thread, that is what transpired.

I was only offering my opinion because I realize you have put quite a bit of work into getting the jackets arranged. And it kinda sucks that you haven't gotten the response that it seemed like you were going to get initially. It just seems to me that in the end, perhaps the jackets ended up being more money than people had initially imagined they would be. And that's not your fault, that's just life. I think you've done a great job putting the deal together and it's upsetting to see you frustrated. That was why I posted what I did.

I know when the thread was started you were just asking who might be interested in purchasing one if you put the deal together, but at that time there was no mention of price.
I was interested until I found out how much they were, if it had been under 100.00 I would have ordered one but I havent paid 150.00 for any jacket for a long time, and maybe I shouldnt have expressed any interest until I knew the price.

I appologize fo any inconvenience I may have caused you, it was never my intention, I realize you put a lot of time and effort into this and I hope there are no hard feelings.

This thread is about ordering jackets, not about why someone can't afford one. All we need is 6 or more and we're all set. So let’s keep all the replies about orders only, not excuses.

Hey Bigmoss

Do you have an email address for Peggy? I would like to email her to see if se has rceived my payment.

Thanks

Bigmoss

Ordered two jackets from Peggy today. She was very helpful...

I checked the price for the same jacket on the Mercruiser site $175.95 plus shipping, and no logo on the back that I can see.

Our price is a great deal. Thanks

Update, on Mercruiser site, jacket back is not shown, but it says logo is on back...my error..still a great price.

QUOTE]People were asked why they hadn't placed orders and they're responding as to why. There's nothing wrong with that.[/QUOTE]

No one asked "Why"

BM said "If you said you wanted a jacket please get your payment and info to Peggy ASAP."

Many have stated they don't want one (whether it’s $300 or $200 Canadian), this thread is for those of us that do.

So let here from the members that want one.
Thanks,

UPDATE!!!

Peggy has the money for 7 jackets as of today. So we should see our jackets within 3 weeks.

There's still time if more orders are placed. So get on it, if you still want one.

Dave,

You've made a couple of posts in this thread that I find a tad bit offensive. And I'm sure there are a few other members that might feel the same way.

When I said people were asked "why" they hadn't placed orders I didn't realize we were going to get into the symantics of how they where asked. So let me be 100% crystal clear this time.

You made a post and I quote...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Start of quote)
It's always the same thing, everybody wants one until they have to pay.
icon_rolleyes.gif
(End of quote)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Based on that post, I offered my opinion as to why people might not have placed an order including myself. And given that I'm on the list of people who supposedly placed an order, (incorrectly I might add), I feel I'm quite entitled to respond to a post which I feel takes a little shot at my integrity, and that of some of the other members of this board.

Then you posted this....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Beginning of quote)
This thread is about ordering jackets, not about why someone can't afford one. All we need is 6 or more and we're all set. So let’s keep all the replies about orders only, not excuses.
(End of quote)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also find that post just a tad offensive. I can certainly "afford" a jacket if I decide I want one or ten. And I'm sure that most of the members on this board can "afford" a jacket or ten if they decide that's what they want. Just because you can afford to buy something, doesn't mean you have to buy it or should buy it. I assumed (wrongly) when this jacket deal started was that these jackets would be around the same price as the other jackets Brilliant currently sells, which are $79 bucks or so. In the end they were quite a bit more and that's why I decided not to proceed. And I'm sure other members feel the same way. A few have already told me as much.

Also, I think I've earned the entitlement to post on this board when I choose to and where I choose to and I don't appreciate being told what I can, or cannot say in a particular thread.

If you notice, Gus, JW and myself, try to give people as much freedom as possible to enjoy the board in their own way. You don't see us editing posts, deleting threads, locking threads etc. too often. And when we do take those measures, it's usually in a rare circumstance where we feel that we have no other alternative. Given that, please don't tell members what they can, or cannot post, or what is or isn't appropriate in a particular thread or forum. That's our job.

Having said all that. I appreciate the work that Bigmoss did attempting to put the jacket deal together. He put a lot of effort into getting the entire thing organized and I'm looking forward to seeing the pics of the members and their jackets.

Bigmoss:I did not reply to your first post about the jackets, but I have sent in an order for two, with a money order, last week and my wife spoke to Peggy on the phone.

Chris,

I see you’re taking this personally, so here we are.

You were the one who came up with the absurd info about the jacket costing $300. Then it was under $200, and you still continue to sabotage BM's fine work. (Whether you realize it or not) Thankfully the jackets are on the way.

It’s good to see your true colors.

My true colors Dave, are to put my money, free time and effort into this site on behalf of people who have the common interest of liking Checkmates. That's all.

And at times, the thanks I get for what I do is posts like your last one.

Yeah Dave, I really earned it...

Just like I earned it a month or so ago when I had to listen to you tell me how our server sucks, right? I gather I deserved to listen to you tell me all about our host, and how they're giving us the shaft because your pages took a second longer to load when compared to OSO. OSO a site that is run for profit and charges a membership fee to do pretty much anything, compared to this one where we don't charge one cent to anyone to do anything. That was a fair comparison, wasn't it? And in the end, just like I suggested to you all along, the problem sure seemed to have been something related not to our site or our host, but to external issues, something I have no control over. And you have the gall to bring up "my true colors" and infer I'm pissing on the efforts of others? Yeah, you're right Dave that's me. Whatever....

Since you think I'm absurd on the price, the jackets do cost over $200 Canadian. That's a fact. And that's the best case scenario. Don't people ordering from Canada need to know that before they order so they can make an informed choice? I think they do. It is helpful to know when you're purchasing something what the price is? I think it is. And in the end, many people could very well still want a jacket and that's cool with me. If I could acertain what the heck the final price of these things are, I might still want one too. But regardless, is what I did, really any different then someone posting feedback about their experience with a particular seller in the seller's thread? I guess someone who points out something they know about a seller or a boat is a bad person too then? Even if what is posted about the potential deal is FACT and might impact the buyers decision? Sorry, I can't say I agree.

Generally, it's not my way to dump on others, but I don't deserved to be dumped on either. Maybe I should have told the entire story of exactly what transpired with Brilliant from the beginning, but I'm from the camp of mistakes can and will happen and I prefer to not dump on people. So instead, I chose to point out to potential buyers a few things to watch out for.

So here's the deal.

A couple of years ago I called up Brilliant in early December to place an order for Christmas presents. The first thing I asked was whether they could deliver my order in time for Christmas, something they said they could do. I then explained to them that on my previous order with them they had shipped the order via UPS and it resulted in a large brokerage fee and I wanted to avoid that if possible. I'm sure many of our Canadian members know that UPS seems to charge unjustifiably huge brokerage fees for stuff shipped over the border. So, I asked Brilliant if they could ship my order via my corporate Purolator account which would save me quite a bit of money. It was my impression that they agreed to do that, as they took my account number and said that it shouldn't be a problem. A week or so went by and Christmas was getting closer and I called to find out where the order was at. I was told it got held up because one of the items was out of stock and had therefore just been shipped out. I asked for a tracking number and that's when I discovered they had shipped the order via their UPS account. When I asked why, they said that the couldn't ship via my account because they had concerns about the insurance coverage on the order. Well, what could I do at that point. I asked about the order still arriving for Christmas and I was told there shouldn't be a problem. Needless to say the order didn't arrive for Christmas. And unfortunately, the order was a pretty substantial part of the gifts I had purchased for my immediate family. So I was left to running around on Christmas Eve to find gifts and leaving an explanation in people's Christmas cards as to where a bunch of their gifts were. The stuff finally arrived AFTER New Years. It was nice stuff. No complaints there. About a week or so after the order arrived, I get the bill from UPS, brokerage fee alone was about 80 bucks U.S. I also had to pay some other charges, sales taxes etc. Needless to say I wasn't happy at all, and I haven't ordered since. There have also been a few other issues with Brilliant that were posted in the past, but I've never really posted much about my experience, other than to warn people to watch out if they are ordering from Canada.

So here's the tally of the price of these jackets as I calculate them.

Jacket-146.15 U.S which is 183.70 Canadian
Shipping-9.95 U.S. which is 12.51 Canadian
Total 196.21 Canadian Dollars

GST 7% 13.73 Canadian
PST 8% 15.69 Canadian

Total $225.63

Bigmoss mentioned that he wasn't totally sure about the brokerage fees so that component is hard to estimate. I've personally always had to pay a brokerage fee for anything coming across the border and I order quite a bit of merchandise. The only time I haven't paid a fee, is when something is marked as a gift. But to honest, I'm usually dealing with a courier service. I truthfully don't know if the USPS charges a fee or not. On that issue, you guys could be right that they don't charge. Assuming they don't, why wouldn't Brilliant have suggested using this method before? The fact they didn't leaves me a little sceptical that there isn't some kind of fee. But time will tell I suppose. I'm sure TCAT will let us know.

Be careful from this point on Dave. We had one other person on this board a couple years ago that wasn't smart enough to know when he was stepping on toes, and as much as he keeps begging, he's still not allowed back into our family here......................

This is becoming a full out mud slinging competition, so I will respond with as much integrity as this thread allows, and end my presence in this thread.

Chris, I said it sucks the speed is down since we all love the site. It looks like you don't want any feed back about anything other than praise, and I'm not into that. I'm here to separate fact from fiction and answer technical questions for anyone who needs help.

I do admit your post offers some valuable info on Brilliant. As you said, you could have stated this story much earlier, and let members decide if it was pertinent, but you didn't. Instead you took shots at the price without a good explanation. If you had, I doubt it would have come to this. BM is in Canada so he has a vested interest in the price of these jackets, and he believes the delivered price will be under $180. We will see. I’m sure if we could all do business in our own countries we would, and this would not be an issue. It’s just not that easy in some cases.

I knew it wouldn’t be long before another moderator would join it. This is a perfect example of moderators needing to monitor themselves. Unfortunately it didn’t happen.

JW, if you think I didn’t know my posts would cause an issue you’re sadly mistaken. So where does that leave you on the intelligence scale???

I spend most of my time answering questions in the Expert forum, and take very little from the forum. I like to help others with I/O mates and offer a lot of high performance knowledge. I’ve learned something here, and I plan to limit my posts in non technical threads be it boating or otherwise.

In a free society, we don’t need to worry about stepping on toes, and therefore I don’t. If I have to then I’d rather leave. So you decide. Chris, would you rather I leave? If so I shall. I am a man of honor and principle, and you can decide who should stay and who should go. Next time tell the whole story, I always do.

I will not be posting in this thread anymore. My Jacket is on the way.

I said be careful of who's toes you step on. I only warn once. You've given Chris a hard time in the past, and you don't seem to have the intelligence to learn. So now I'll give you a little time to learn.

Dave,

Was it Seattle Slew or Secretariat that you rode in on?

I cannot believe you are being disrespectful to two moderators, especially Chris. You self-acclaim that you are a "man of honor", well sir, a man of honor would not be disrespectful to Chris who is indeed a man of honor by donating his time and resources to establish and maintain a not for profit (believe it or not Dave it costs Chris $$$ to run this site) for all of us to enjoy while never demanding anyone send him any form of donation, large or small. Seeing your over 400 posts I notice that you often visit this site yet have never offered to politely donate anything but are very generous in slamming this site on mnay occasions (one only needs to read through this thread and others to see this).

Your responses are quite rude and condescending. I thank Chris for being the one who actually tried to attach a cost to the jackets in the first place. Here's an idea, when you are trying to sell something, how about give potential consumers the price at the same time! It's kind of like going to a dealership and buying a car in the window without a price sticker! Very few would do this.

People who did not buy the jackets or who had to back off for whatever reason, and not just simplyin your narrow dollar and sense mindframe, wrote replies telling you why they couldnt go ahead with the purchase. It was only polite of them and in fact would have been rude of them to have stated an initial level of interest and then never acted upon it or simply vanished without giving you a personal reason as to why.

Smarten up buddy. Realize that your words can indeed hurt other people's feelings.

Enjoy your jacket, it sure cost you a lot in the integrity department. Hope it fits over your head.

Black Pulse

Well said Black Pulse,..... Dave spend some $$$ on a donation and get over it.True colors??? Chris spends many hours and $$ keeping the site going.It appears everyone but you can see that.Quit slagging him for giving us information about the jackets .
