Just bought Merc 1000 68?69

I recently purchased a Merc 1000 a 68 or 69 from what I can tell. The pastor that sold me it (along with a boat and trailer for 500) said he had seen it run very well about 3 years ago. The engine is prestine looking and I plan on painting and getting new decals.

I was told it was winterized before it was put away. What should I do myself? Really it needs to be rewired the whole thing not just the plugs. I want to replace the water pump and haven't tried to start it because of that. Other than that I think I want to get it tuned up of course. Is there a place where I can get wiring diagrams?

Also where can I get and what are some of the best, hydraulic jacks that I can use with this motor?

It is going on an xm-15.

My apologies if this is in another post I am searching through them now.

wiring diagrams mastertechmarine.com or max rules. get service manual on ebay. parts at boats.net. if it were mine i leave the original paint just light compound then wax

Thanks for the info and the suggestion. I used rubbing compound and some polishing compound. I didn't think that would bring a 50 year old motor back to life but it did. Fixing the paint chips will be a lot easier then painting the whole thing. I will post pictures later.

My dad painted both my 1500 inline sixes for me and I put on new decals . The paint was in bad shape on both . The 1975 the paint was so bad it was like chauk . Everytime you would touch it would leave a black mark on your hands . They each only used about a quart of paint . But they both turned out really nice . He even sprayed my 1975 vmate I that I just restored . I have one more checkmate I need to rebuild hopefully I can talk him into painting this one for me and the 100 merc im going to hang on the back .... good luck with yours hope it turns out nice for you ....

50 yrs old? I must be still using old math:poke:

For Mercury decals, these are the best, used by the Pros and accurately reproduced. By looking at the 68 & 69 years, you should be able to tell which year your engine is. The 69's all have "MERC 1000" on the sides of the top cover. The 68's don't and had the "SS" (solid state ignition) designation on the back. The lower cowl decals differ also. He is in Toronto.

If your engine does not have power trim, you may want to use the CMC "Trim and Tilt" jackplate, even though it has no vertical adjustment. There is an additional part needed from them for the thumb screw bracket Mercs.

It should be noted that the 1000's have the smaller 90 ci block as compared to 100 ci block on the 1250's. The wrap cowl is also about 1/2" shorter in height.

For wiring diagrams on-line, go here and find your engine: (this site is a wealth of other information also)

I also recommend you replace all fuel lines on the engine.

Thanks! I am just getting ready to start this project. How about Atlas power trim? Can they be used? I have been trying to find something that will work well but I am fairly new to this. I haven't been able to find and actual "mercury" tilt and trim.
