Mercury vs Rude

Vandalizer

Well-known member
I'm looking for some helpful guidance about three different motors:

Mercury 150 V6 XR2 - I've found that the rev limit is supposedly 5600, but I've seen other posts that say they've run them up to 6200. The gear ratio here is 1.87:1.

Mercury 175 V6 (XR2?) - Same as above, not sure on the gear ratio or max rpm.

Rude 235 hi-po w/ V8 LU - From what I've found, the max rpm of the stock form of these is 5800, but I've also seen references to these spinning up to 7k. Also heard these suck HARD on the gas when you're pushing them, but they have plenty of beef.

Any help?

The Mercury 150hp XR2 is a very long lasting reliable engine. It is a 2.0L and has a 2:1 gear case. I always run mine over 6200rpms every time I run it.

If your looking for an engine for your Enticer then think that you should go with a mercury.

Thanks for clearing up the gear ratio- guess I can't trust too much at iboats.

I'm actually looking at a couple Hydrostreams :sssh:

My problem is I can't find a reasonable price for a 150-200 to dump on my Enticer that isn't already on another boat, and it seems like an awful lot of work to swap two motors.

Swapping outboards is very easy. If you get a Merc you can use the controls and steering that is already on your boat.

On the other hand, Hydrostreams are a lot faster.

checkmate speed

Checkmates sometimes get a bum rap for being slow because of the way most of them are setup. Alot of these boats are setup for skiing, tubing , and speed and have the propshaft 3" or more below the pad. Most Hydrostream Vkings/ Vectors etc. are setup with the propshaft 1" above the pad. This makes a big difference in speed if you have the right stuff, good tight dual cable steering, solid motor mounts and a low water pickup with a water pressure guage. With the motor that high, the boat will not plane very quickly with any additional weight aboard though. I'm not saying anything negative about Hydrostreams, I love them, but Checkmates are a fast boat aswell. I have a 17' Panther( made ar Quinns Marina in Ontario Canada) that is the same hull as a Checkmate V-Mate2, I have a 6" manual jcckplate with an 89 225 omc looper. So far at 2" below the pad with a 26" omc raker prop , I have hit 78 on gps. The boat is a blast to drive. I now have the propshaft 1" under the pas and am waiting to test it. I'm hoping for over 80, sorry for the rant, too much coffee this morning I think!

Panther Speed

We'll 1" under was way too high, 60' rooster tail impressed the neighbors though LOL. I bought this motor used and it came with a nosecone without low water pickups, I have blocked the top three holes and machined the bottom hole twice as wide. I think the cone at my speeds is killing some bow lift and hurting performance. I'm going to remove it either this summer if I get some time or this fall.I think I can get about 80 mph and have good all around performance with the 26 Raker prop I have on it now.

I think you need to get a nose cone with lwp on that set-up. With that lower unit and no cone at those speeds your asking for a blow out. Your boat sounds fun do you have any pics?

Any pics of that bada$$ rooster?

Back to the topic of this thread- something else that I realized- Mercury 2.4/2.5 powerheads seem MUCH easier to come by than any JohnnyRudes. There's another + in the Merc category.

I will try and post some picks later tonight, they are on my home computer.I will create a new thread. No picks of the big rooster, my friend was in the boat laughing with with me.I'm still getting good water pressure at 2" to 2.5" below. I think it runs best right now at 2.5 below. At least it sounds good with the offshore mid.I have no idea why the prevous owner put on a nosecone without a lwp.Btw I agree on the 2.4/2.5 Mercs, but if you find a good 235 crossflow for the right price, they are fast and not too heavy and a very reliable motor.

Weight

Top, remember all the early Black V6's from 135 to 225 were very close to weighing the same. You would be very happy with a 150 on your Enticer, if your just Freakin Crazy go with a 200 but just remember to use your laynard to the kull switch. And don't forget to apply for your Pilot's License because you will be Flyin Low
