Metalflake - No Gelcoat?

I have a 76 V-Mate 1 with the same color scheme only in silver and black. Mine is the same way and from what I have read I am going to try the wet sand and lots of elbow greese and see what happens. I see your from Dayton, where about do you go boating maybe we can hook up sometime.

I did some light wet sanding and tried Aqua-Buff which helped bring back some luster unfortunately the colors are too far shot to restore. I'm probably going to paint it. Let me know if you have better luck then I.

I normally boat on the Ohio River. Where do you boat at?

I'd wet sand it to rough it up like 800 grit, make sure all the grease and handprints are off of it and if it looks good wet, it will look good when clear coated. Clear will stick to what you have and provide at least a decade of fine looks. I strongly suggest you do not put bottom paint on the boat. Put it in slings or trailier it..

Oh and I have it all wet sanded with 600 then 1000 but didnt get buffed because my bffer quit working. I did hand rub som eof it and it looks so so much better. Wont be perfect or show but Im not out for that. It will do me until I get the time to do it right.

What were some of your issues? Hopefully they aren't major like having to replace all of your core? If you ever need any help, just holler...I think you're like an hour or so away.

Not sure yet as to all that might need done. It just felt like a tank in the water, wouldn't plane out even at full throttle. Motor runs strong and left one heck of a boil behind but it just wouldn't go anywhere. The bad part was in about an hour of being on the water I drained about a gallon of water out of it when I pulled the plug. Kinda has me worried. I know there are soft spots in the floor but I climbed up on the motor and jumped up and down to see if there was any movement in the transom and it seems strong.
