More Pitch??

Had some excellent runs today after taking some friends tubing.
Motor felt real strong and boat felt lite!!

Question: I saw the tach reach 5900 on one run.
Max is 5800 I think.('87 Merc 115) I am already running a 23P Michigan Wheel stainless and getting 52 GPS. If the tach is right, I should be able to go up in pitch to lower WOT rpm and pick up more speed.

I do not have a jackplate.

Any thoughts on this??

Thanks

Yep, you could start expiermenting w/ props. I just listed a 24P Michigin Wheel 4 blade 13 3/4" diameter on ebay a couple days ago.I think my reserve is set at 125.00 but I forget for sure.

I agree. Depends alot on what you're doing with the boat though. I have a 20p with the same setup, and it works well for me because I don't typically hit long stretches where I can go WOT. If you do mostly river cruising at WOT, you might want to prop for 5600.

Do you have a Quicksilver controls box? If so, how is your tach hooked up? Supposedly I can get an adapter plug that goes into the front of the box, but I haven't been able to find one yet.

One other thing- How does your boat get out of your water with the 23? My 20p is SS, but I also have a 23p aluminum. I've been undecided on whether to swap and give it a try.

I've never seen a 'performance' aluminum prop. They're probably OK for general purpose boating, but not if you want top performance, you need a good brand SS. They're is SIOOO much more to props than pitch and diameter. That's whole book in itself.

Is there any information out there on slip numbers for aluminum versus SS? That'd help me in some comparison before I try a switch.

It gets out of the water pretty quick when I am alone.
The boat has too much weight in back. (Motor and gas tank)
This is causing problems with planing.
I do have a "Doel Fin". Without it the bow bounces badly. (Balance-Light Front End))

I was able to pull 2 adults on a tube with 2 of us in the boat.
It did struggle to plane but it did.
99% of the time I will be cruising.
The boat is very good on gas and would be a little better if I could go up in pitch.
I need to verify my tach.
I would like to hit 55 GPS but the steering has to be updated first!!

I picked up 4.5 mph when I went from 17P to 23P.

Wait, did you just use the term 'good on gas' when talking about a boat?
I have the same motor, although I have a choke plate instead of the enrichener system you do- I believe this only makes a difference on cold starts. I haven't had a chance to really verify this, but I believe if I was running full out for about 2 or 3 hours, I'd blow right through 16 gallons. I easily went through 10 gallons during 5 days of mostly idling through channels and sitting at a sand bar- only occasional short runs of wot. I am pretty new to boating, but I expected a bit more.

Good on Gas!!??

Well let's see....
I ran about 30-35 miles with some slow side trips and a fair number of quick starts.
I went through 7 gal. The water was very rough and was quite windy.
**5 MPG I guess is not that great after all!!**

My '88 115 would spin to 6300 and get 63 mph gps. I had a 24" Lazer II...
ran sweet as hell! Jacked up 1 1/2 below with neutral trim.

Don't go up in pitch. You will have no holeshot. 5800 is fine for these motors. The inline 6 is way happier revving than lugging. When propping these motors the ideal is the lowest pitch prop, spinning the highest revs you are comfortable with. I always propped mine for 6000 RPM light.

Thanks for all of the great info!
I tried to sell my Check this Summer but did not happen.
If I end up keeping it, I will upgrade the steering to a BayStar system
then look into the prop/rpm next Summer.

I am running a Michigan Wheel stainless.
Is there another prop/same pitch that would give more speed???
I am not positive that the tach is correct.
I think it is original. It is wired to the tach signal coming out of the control box.

I would like to see 55 out of this boat.

The current steering (Single Cable) is causing some serious chine.
It has to go!
