"Msmile's " Baja killer 115

BR--
As another said, I was referring to the new DI motors. A guy at our shop had a merc 150 2-stroke on a fishing boat. He switched to a new DI 150 and cut his fuel usage in half. He runs the exact same fishing route in Canada and knows his fuel usage to the pint. The old 300 ProMAx sucks fuel bigtime but the new 300XS is the daddy. A test w/ 24s is in order. I'll order them both today.

Boatn70---string-jerkers (outboards) rule the world of speed according to someone else's earlier post. It all depends on application. If size and cubic dollars are not a problem the car motor is faster. I knew a guy with a 572 in a 18' Glastron. Not too many (if any) OB powered Glastrons could beat him. I do think outboards are faster on a budget. That rule may be changing. Price a new 300Xs--ouch!

Shameless-
1. Des Moines is right on the pipeline that runs from Texas to Minneapolis. (Cheaper transportaton costs.)
2. IL has much higher taxes on fuel vs IA. Even though Davenport is in IA, it is affected by the higher retail cost just across the river.

msmile, my reference to outboards is the fact that a 21' boat with all being the same except for OB vs I/O, the OB hp for hp will blow the I/O away! How many cubic inches of car motor does it take to out run a 185ci out board on the same size boat?
I know you can build 800ci car motors and run big numbers, I am just thinking of ci to ci and 2 stroke vs 4 stroke. boatman:cheers:

Hey I had the same Allison you have. It was white with yellow stripes and black windshield. I had it ordered new in 2000. I put a 280 merc on it and I ran a best of 115 on gps. This was with the wife riding next to me. It would pull a merc. 32 lightning Et prop 8500 rpm running the big #'s. It really is a fun good handling boat.

Boatman- cubic inch to cubic inch you are correct. The two sroke makes power twice as often vs four stroke. The downfall of OB's in the past is they were relatively inefficient at cruise speeds, no longer. I think the 10% hp/fuel rule applies to 2 or 4 strokes @ WOT.

BR--these are made-up numbers. 24' (IO) weighs 3600# w/ 496 (375hp) power is about 10#/hp. and will run 72? at 10% rule=72/37.5=1.92-----2 mpg@ WOT.

Same boat w/ 300xs is 3000# again the same 10#/hp. Boat will run? 72? keep in mind the C.G. or leverage to carry the bow is farther back. Same speed with same 10% rule = 72/30=2.4 mpg. (20% better mpg). IMO that boat will get well over 3 mpg at cruise. Can an IO will do that? Also, DI's are only 10% better at WOT, they shine at cruise.

That's my theory anyway...

hey, i like that name, it rhymes with smilemaker. hey red, wait till you see me this year. were conserving gas. rides over in 1 minute, for that feeling of being out all day. heres a hint, 18', steering wheel in center of dash, one seat in front, 2 in back, redneck fool aka captainmorgan. i get to go 90 this year. that 80 proof black velvets got old, but still good. lets drink to our drinking to that

whats up red? your necks changed color this winter. mine did too. january had me scared to hit floating ice at 70. i think my face turned red, and my neck white

ok, thanks:eyecrazy:but i apollojise to chek, yet weve got more of them than any other boats, and us fools are engineering boats that bring smiles along with speed. can u imagine my 21 w/ 350 hp 3.4? or my 2.5 on the 18 like this one excep mine has steering wheel in center with one seat in front, and its all white, like me, and my other boats, except my check. my 75 might push it along ok:banana:
