My first checkmate

does engine suppose to lean down so when front boat is in air the engine levels out.I dont understand why it leans down in front.mounts solid.

Pretty sure the trim on those old OMC's use the front mount to move the drive. So when drive is trimmed up the front of the motor will be low and when the drive is trimmed down the front of the motor will be high. And then it also has the tilt function what is a gear drive on the side of the drive. I may be off on that tho as i am not sure what years and all they used that system.

Also make sure you check the drive seal real close! I have helped pull a boat or 2 off of the bottom due to that seal drying out and cracking causing a quite large water leak!

so i dont get that.you know the clutch pack.well the guy before me messed lock ring up.so i took tilt clutch gear off my other stringer, and got it back together, but theres these paper thin washers on other side gear, and on my boat has two,on other boat only had one,now i cant figure out how many it takes.i got a book but dont see anything about them washers.

and please tell me more about what your saying, because the other day it didnt look low in front.i just dont think it will lookright after putting high rise and stuff

does anyone have any links to entertainer buillds, interior?I want to redo interior once i hit water and know everything else ok.cant seem to find i/o builds with walkthrough.

Looks like a good deal. Just wondering what the last 2 digits are on the hull id.
Looks like your missing the pads on the rear deck and I don't think 79 had that deck.

i actually found original ad on ebay that looked just like it.the rear deck a little weak.i dont want to put a flat deck on it.im gonna eventually put 350 with single carb tunnel ram with scoop later on,but not sure now if motor really moves with outdrive.i want the look mostly original.so whats the hull id?its not the vin is it?maybe i got a late in the year body of a 80 model.

yeah it has 79d for the last 3 on title.im still wondering about if motor really moves like that.would i be able to do thru hull exhaslt like that.

If you can take pics of the front mount where it is connected to the motor and the stringers. If it has a little electric motor on or around it then im pretty sure it will use the motor for trip. Does the boat have 2 separate switches for trim and tilt? if so does anything happen when you push up or down on the trim switch? When you put a high rise on it you will just have to make sure you leave yourself enough clearance for the movement and the rubber section of exhaust hose should flex enough for the threw hull exhaust.

This drive package will never be the fastest around. They do not have the best design for going fast. They will hold back a little bit of power but not crazy power. They are also getting hard to find people that will work on them and parts to repair them when they do break..

How large is the hole in the transom compared to a Alpha. If the Alpha is bigger maybe find a junk boat and transfer a alpha transom Assembly and drive that may be the way to go. you can usually find rotten boats on craigslist for cheap to free to get all the parts you'd need for a conversion.

I have one of those drives on my Eluder, everything you have been told so far is correct. The whole motor moves up and down at the front to trim the drive. As a result there is a little less total trim then an Merc alpha and so you can't trim up as far or get quite as much speed. Also the drives can only tolerate 300hp or so and no wake jumping at full power without pulling back on the throttle or you will kill it. If you are having issues with either the tilt or the trim not working or only working occasionally the first thing to check is the fuses in the wiring and then the relays, they get old and worn. Also try to minimize driving around with the tilt up as the two ball gears will wear out rather quickly. I have had a set last 16 yrs but I'm careful to keep the drive (tilt) in the full down position whenever I do anything more then idle.

Conversion requires filling in the hole as it is much larger then a Merc hole, some have been done with stainless steel plates and plywood.

hull id is on the port rear corner of yours.

Not saying your wrong I'm always just wondering.

Like Keith said your Hull ID is on the rear corner of the boat and will look like CHKXXXXXXXX. Another thing to consider would be to get the correct OMC Inboard Engine Service Manual and OMC Sterndrive Service Manual for the for your year of boat. They are available at Marine Engine.com or you might be able to find them on Ebay, but would be quit valuable to you as you work on you boat. Jim

yeah this is omc 800.it has a electric motor in the back.everyone i talk to say these are good drives just dont own one unless you have the ability to work on them.ive done read about tring to convert not happening.i had a electric shift stringer also, and it didnt use the front mount.

i got the right book, but it shows the newer clutch with the adjustment to keep tension.the one i got you have to press in place.wonder if i can switch to the newer clutch taht way i can adjust the tension, but not sure if compadible.

You can go to Marine Engines.com and look at the parts diagrams for the Sterndrives and compare the parts shown. Write down the respective different parts numbers. Then if there is a good Marina that services OMC's in your area you might be able to talk to the mechanic and ask if they are interchangeable. But then again, maybe someone here on the forum has already encountered this before. Jim

i still havent pressed this clutch together yet.i was busy stripping another boat.id hate to sell the boat, but have been hearing bad about the omc stringer except it turns better.
