need jackplate advice

Well, I have a 175 johnson that I put on my 20' mate. The Johnson is a 25" shaft and of course the original motor was a 20" shaft.

I have the motor on the highest transom mounting spot, but it still drags up alot of water and i'm only getting 52mph out of it. Also, when I trim the motor, the boat is all over the place and very unsteady.

I have decided to get a jackplate, but am debating between getting a 4" setback or a 6" setback. What would all of you recommend? Will the 2" make a difference?

I need to make a decision this week.

Go with the 6" set-back and mount the engine at the top mounting holes, your trying to get your prop shaft about 3" below the V to start with.
A 175 will only probably push your 20' to the upper 50's to low 60's but it should handle better.

If your transom is dry and solid, I'd recommend the RapidJack HD 10" setback for a manual plate. Second choice the CMC 10" setback manual plate. I never found any real mph gains with a 6" setback, just height adjust-ability. 10" seems pretty decent, more if you think the transom is rock solid.

You might want to consider trading the 25" shaft motor for a 20" motor if you can. With a 25", you'll have all that weight teetering even higher than you really want.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've been thinking about trading the motor for another. :shakehead:

Anyone have a 20" shaft 175 for sale :)
