Need Prop Advice 90 Merc

I'm looking for Top End not Hole shot. Presently running 13.5x17. Great otta the hole but only 45mph. The boat is 1980 Enticer/Predictor appx. 800 lb's. I've been having tach issues so I don't know rpm at WOT. But I feel the engine could handle more pitch. Engine specs. are max rpm 5000-5500 with gear ratio of 2.30 to 1 and does have pwr trim. Was hoping someone might be familiar with this setup, any advice would be appreciated. Prop mistakes are very costly as we all know.

Doug, I also have tach. probs. at the time but my Predictor runs high R's with a 14x19 but not too much. I ran a 23P once and it went fast but the R's were low so I just purchaced a 13 3/8x21P ballistic off ebay and am hoping it will arrive for this weekend. I'll let you know. Mike

Hey Doug, I just did a little math home work and if the speed you are talking about is gps with a 17" prop and a 2.3 gear ratio, you are turning close to 7000rpm's. 6500rpm's equals 45mph with 0% slip which is not possible. You are way under propped! But we can fix that. boatman

Good Advice

Thanks to Boatman4021, The new prop works great. I haven't done a GPS reading but at WOT the tach reads at 5800 as it should. I now feel that with the addition of a jackplate I'll be able to show a respectable mph for my little Black motor.

Doug (Enticer1):cheers
