need wiring help

Could someone help me with a diagram of starting , charging system for 87 exciter i/o? Where should bat. from alternator go and what is the component with 2 big terminals and 2 small terminals that is above starter solenoid ?My positive goes from battery to starter ,to circuit breaker ,to whatever that thing is, then into wiring harness . My boat is not charging and i had the alternator rebuilt ,still not charging , I think the wiring is wrong . thanks

Did they install a new voltage regulator?

yes i had a regulator put on because i couldnt find one on the boat ,and it was not internally regulated

I think the wiring is messed up , previous owner took out v/8 and put in 4cyl. Bat. from alt goes into wiring harness i think it should go to battery .
