New Checkmate Owner, Michigan

Jonesy

New member
Hi Everyone,

In the process of purchasing my first boat. 1988 Enticer, open bow, with 115 Merc. It's in excellent condition and I'm looking forward to a great summer. Just moved to a small lake and can't wait to have some fun. I do need a cover for the boat. Would you suggest having a custom cover made or are the "off the shelf" semi-custom covers pretty good?
I look forward to being a member of the Checkmate Community!

I have the same boat, but 7 years older. What color?
I also have a full cover that the previous owner used - not custom, but it works. Let me know if you're interested.

Welcome! There are plenty of good covers out there for roughly half of what you would pay someone to make you a custom cover.

Congrats!! I just bought a full mooring cover from Checkmate. Fits like a glove and is made out of Sunbrella which is supposed to be the best (or one of the best). It'll run a bit more than an off the shelf cover but to me, it's worth it for the fit, the look, and the quality of material and work. If I remember correctly, it was $500-$550. I found a generic one that would have worked for $300 so I suppose it's all what it's worth to you.

JW on this site is in Vicksburg MI and has owned more Checkmates than I can count. I'm sure he'll pipe in sometime as well.

With covers, you get what you pay for. I've tried the $79 WallMart covers, they're junk. I've spent $600 on a custom cover, it was perfect.

:welcome: There is a good group up here in Michigan........Watch out for the thread about the Saginaw River Checkmate Take-Over in August!

Question for you-what colors are on your cowl? I couldn't tell from the picture I saw. What I'm getting at is I have a brown boat with blue colored accents on the cowling, and you may have a blue boat with brown.

Welcome!!, Just a thought on the cover. It's a lot more cost effective to keep what you have in good condition than it will be to replace it when it gets sun and water damaged. A cheep cover will not breath and allow mold to grow. I have learned the hard way on almost everything. So if you can get a decent cover, get one. I bought mine from Mike at checkmate last year, it was a little less than having a cover made. and it fit perfectly.
Nice boat, Good luck with it!!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions on the cover. Sounds like I'll take a look at what Checkmate has to offer or purchase a quality cover (in not something custom made... definitely not something cheap.

Welcome to the board. You are going to have some fun. Where you boating?

For now my plan is to stay in the small chain of lakes I'm on in Waterford (Loon Lake, Schoolhouse Lake, Wormer Lake and Mohawk Lake), until I feel comfortable with the boat. I may trailer the boat to some other sites eventually, but not right away.
