New Checkmate owner!

Hey everyone, my name is Matt and I am down in Tampa Florida. I have always wanted a Checkmate ever since I got into boats. Today my dream came true. I bought a 1989 16' Checkmate Enticer with a 1989 Evinrude 70hp outboard. I have read through just about every single post on here to find out everything I could about this particular model. I am stoked to see a group with so much knowledge and advice. I am sure I am going to have a ton of questions.

I had a chance to completely inspect it. The interior was stripped by the owner. It is carpeted, but all the seats and panels have been removed. The only issue I have found with the boat is in the bow. The bow seat “structure” has pretty severe wood rot. It looks like someone rebuilt the area with plywood and no sealant. This made me wonder about the rest of the work that was done, but everything looks solid and proper. I will be taking it out this weekend and see how she performs. I plan on rebuilding the bow seating area soon. Look for future posts on that. Down the road I hope to have the original driver and passenger seats reupholstered.

If anyone has any advice about these boats, I would love to hear it.

Pictures to come

Good looking enticer!

if you havent seen it yet, the enticer is the same hull as the predictor, and theres even more info on here about them.

Good luck on the fix ups, and as always on here, my biggest advice is get more HP! I would guess it will run ok with that 70 on it... if you want it to run like a normal outboard runabout itll be fine for running around on the water, but probably lookin at mid thirties for top speed.

let us know how it runs!

I agree 100%. I was surprised it only had a 70hp on it. I figure it might be a good thing as the boat dealt with less stress over time with the smaller engine. I will be looking for an upgrade next season. I am thinking a 115 E-TEC would be more appropriate.
