New From IL

Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself. I've just acquired my first Checkmate (first boat actually) in a '76 V-Mate II. I know the previous owner, and for the price we just couldn't pass it up. It needs a bit of work, but I'm looking forward to it. I've just stumbled onto this site about a week ago, and it seems like there's alot of good people with good knowledge here!

Welcome Tohp! I'm from McHenry too. Is that the boat that was for sale in Twin Lakes for $2500.00:welcome:

Nope, this one came from Pentwater, MI although it's still got an IL sticker on it. A friend of mine had bought it in IL a few years ago, and just ended up not using it much. I got it for $500 with the trailer, so it sounded like a good deal to me. He was pretty confident that it needs a fuel pump, so tracking that down is gonna be my first mission. Other than that I've got to redo the upholstery since a possum apparently decided he wanted to live in the boat while it was stored. The bad news is that he chewed the seats up, the good news is that it doesn't look like he was in there that long.

I'm anxious to get it out on the chain!

Wow $500.00 bucks was a great deal! I picked up my Predictor w/o an engine and have to replace the floor, stringers, and transom for $300.00. Now my deal doesn't seem so good after all. Have fun on the Chain O' Lakes, Make sure you have all your safety equipment and a designated driver for Thursday night Drag Boat Races because between the Lake county Sheriff, McHenry county Sheriff, U.S. Coast guard, and the Dept. of Natural Resources, It's just a matter of time before you get pulled over for a safety check as they call it. But its really to see if the Captain is sober. I have been pulled over one night by all four Gestapo Agencies in my fishing boat, Go figure!:sssh:

So I'm almost wrapped up with my seat repairs, and I'm hoping to put her in the water this weekend. Any of you chain folks have recommendations where I can at least stick the back end in the water and work the bugs out? I don't really want to be "that guy" and tie up a busy launch, but I'm not comfortable enough to just let er rip quite yet.

Ahh, your first boat --- so Checkmate will now and forever be known as your first love.

:welcome: to the forum, we can't wait to hear how you like your new mate once your in the water --- you say it needs a bit of work, so keep us posted {don't foget pics} with any work you do.

Enjoy :surf:

I boat on the chain with my 270BR. The Chain o' lakes state park is calm and easy. If you go in the morining you can pretty much have as much time as you want. It is the best ramp on the chain and best of all you already paid for it with taxes!

just work the bugs out on the muffs/garden hose at home and then splash it:thumb:

Thanks again everyone!

I had the muffs on it last weekend and fired it for the first time, but I shut it off right away. How long should it take for water to come out of the "pee-hole"? I got a bit nervous and didn't want to risk cooking anything.

I have pics of what I've done, but it's a definite work in progress. I need to get things organized and create a thread.
