New Guy considering an older Checkmate...

Hey guys and ladies,
I am new here, just found the site while pondering my next toy purchase. I currently have a nice Older Nacra 5.2 catamaran sailboat. It is tons of fun and it is not in terrible shape for its age. The only problem is my wife does not like it. I LOVE to sail this boat but it makes her nervous especially coming into the pier to load up. Therefore I am now putting the Nacra on Craigslist and looking around for a more simple boat preferably something speedy and easy to handle that she will also enjoy. I started looking at Craiglist boat sale ads and happened upon several older 70's and 80's model Checkmate boats. We ALMOST bought a Checkmate when we lived down in florida years ago. So I started to look around and found that there are quite a few nice examples that appear to need minor work for reasonable prices. There are also many that appear to need MAJOR work for super cheap. I am seriously considering getting one and fixing it up for my family boat/pleasure speeder/ski boat. I like the looks of these things, SLEEK and look fast standing still LOL... I am unsure of what model really yet as they all look nice and sporty. My wife really says she wants a bowrider version so perhaps that is the way we should go. Cannot remember the name of those models but I would love to find a running decent shape 80's model bowrider Checkmate boat for a reasonable price. I am a fair fabricator and run a custom shop building all sorts of cools stuff for customers and I even have my own Vertical Machining Center as well as pro quality paint equipment so I THINK I can tackle this project. I am even familiar with fiberglass work.

So anyways I thought I would drop in here and ask you guys for suggestions about what model boat to buy, looking for something 19-20 foot I think since I have two kids and stepkids as well. What model would you recommend and what are the point to look for/problem areas of these models? Are they a good solid boat that will last if I put some work into prettying it up or are they prone to problems? I just got this stupid grin on my face just drooling over the pictures of some of the nicer ones for sale. They look so damn sweet and fast I cannot wait to get my Nacra sold so I can purchase one. Thanks and nice to meet all of you. Peace

Pete

Hey thanks for the kind welcome man, A pulse 210 huh, is that the same thing as a pulsare? I am new here and don't know jack about these boats. Looking at pictures on google of the pulse 210 it looks like a nice boat, bowrider, sleek, pretty much what I am looking for. Won't be able to make a move until I sell my Catamaran tho. Got any pictures? Nice to meet ya man. Peace

:welcome: To the forum!

Although I haven't seen any other 218's around, I am kind of partial to mine posted on the member intro here. There are alot of pro's and con's here on inboards or outboards. With good reason. Good luck in your search.

:welcome: Check the floor of what ever you find. If the floor is soft, assume the transom is not far behind. It's all fixable, just a matter of how deep you want to get into restoration. :thumb:

Huh, floors huh. I have heard that before....

How is the best way to check the floor, I mean ya gotta remove the carpet to really tell? Can you just walk all over it and tell or is it more subtle and need to investigate further. Would prefer of course to NOT have to rebuild the entire boat but I will try to find a decent specimen to work on. Hoping for a usable boat that runs and floats LOL so we can enjoy it while fixing it up somewhat. I also would probably prefer at least an 18 -21 foot boat assuming there is room for my family etc... That Starflite and enchanter look sweet altho I am not sure either came as bowriders. How roomy are these boats without the bowrider seating up front? I mean can you take your wife and two kids and still have room to move around somewhat? Where can you stow your gear and ski toys? Peace

Just did a google search for Checkmate 218 and it came up persuader. Looks like a very nice boat. I am sure asking whether inboard or outboard is better is akin to asking if Ferrrari or lamborghini is better LOL.... I kinda think I should stay with a decent outboard boat just so it will be kinda easier to replace the motor should it die on me but that is probably ill thinking huh....Peace

Nice looking boat man!!

Welcome Pete.

The Starliner and Entertainers are both older bow riders.

Here's an entertainer in Charleston, SC. http://charleston.craigslist.org/boa/3927523270.html

Hey that's not bad man....ooh and only $5.00!! LOL Never heard of that model so far but it looks like what I am after. Say a prayer for me that someone buys my nice Cat and I can move forward with this crazy idea. At least my wife was like...."well at least they look cool and probably go fast" when i showed her some pictures of the Checkmates....These boats are nothing if not impressive looking LOL....Peace

Thanks for posting the videos..

Hey Pete,

To give you an idea of the different Checkmate boat models, I have attached two youtube music videos that showcase the different models.
The boats in these videos are all from this forum from one time or another.

Turn up your speakers and enjoy...

DAYUM!! Those are some sweet looking boats. There is one that jumped out at me. It is a RED and BLACK boat with an outboard with tinted windows near the 2.41 mark of that video. LOOKS awesome, what kinda boat is that one? Also the one at .11 and 1.38 are sweet boats...Just what I am dreaming of building. Thanks for posting those sweet vids.. Peace
