hi guys,
i just signed up for the site here.
and i also just boat my first boat, a checkmate.
its a project boat, needs complete interior redone, havent played with the motor yet, but am told she runs good. have no idea about the outdrive...its a v-6 i/o built in 1983 18'5".
i just got her home, and am going to start tearing into her this weekend. if you have any suggestions or advice, or have a clue as to where i should start, please reply to this post and unload on me.....
btw, hi everyone, my name is Bruce, and i live in fayetteville, n.c. nice to meet everyone and am looking forward to picking a few brains here.
thanks in advance,
Bruce

Welcome to the board and congrats on the new boat.
As far as the interior goes you have a few choies. Contact the factory and have them make a new factory interior. Find a local place and have them sew together one. Or build your own.
I have had good luck with this site http://store.yahoo.com/veadastore/index.html
They will build just about anything.
Make sure all the new wood backing for the interior is sealed 100% or you will have to do it all over again in a few years.
What motor is on the back, Merc or OMC.
How is the floor and tranosm?
If you have questions ask away.

its a v-6 omc with a 600 outdrive......does that sound right ? i havent cranked it yet, but was assured the motor ran fine. do you know where i can find a pic of this particular boat so i can see what it should look like "factory fresh". i kind of like the idea of a new factory interior, where do i contact for that ? and last for now, any idea where to find (maybe online) an owners or operators manuel, factory specs...etc....
the floor seems solid as a rock, and from what i can tell, the transome too is good and solid.

one more question for now...color scheme...
was told the boat is rare....i have no idea what constitutes rare in the boating world, or if he was just pulling my leg.
but my question is, am i "free" to lay out any scheme i prefer, or would i be guilty of commiting some unknown sin by changing the colors.
the boat btw, is in need of some minor glass work along the keel, and bow area, and has not one stitch of clearcoat on the top side.....i can see some very minor scuff marks like the clear was stripped off in an earlier aborted refurbishing attempt so im going to take this oppurtunity to do any color changes at this time. should i leave the bottom half black ? or is it all just a matter of taste ?

Welcome to our obsession! glad to see another North Carolinian around. check out the Showroom and figure out which boat you have. lots of good pics and info in there....

i almost forgot the best part...i only paid 460 bucks for her !!
heres the link to her on ebay, if it helps anyone tell me what model she is...lol, the "vin tag" on the side of dash is worn almost to nothing, so i dont even know what model she is .....damn, i hope shes not some lame ass granny model.
thanks again for all your help to come and hope to grow into a long time member of this group

Eluder I/O looks like it. $5000 more and a lot of work..... you have a nice cheap ride!

good luck we are here to help!

Welcome I would get the motor running first . make sure the drive is good. then you really know what you got. saw your boat on ebay the seller bought it about a week earlier. he bit off more than he could chew. but with the help and knowhow from the members here youll be cruzin in notime. saw some nice seats on line at westmarine under pontoon seats.$135.00 ea good luck OC.

ok....my last day off this week, so im off to the marina to see if i can get someone to help me fire her up. will keep you informed....cross those fingers !

Welcome to the Checkmate club. Given the condition of the interior components you want to be 110% sure that no rot has started. If you're not sure, find somebody who can tell you for sure. It will be cheaper and easier to fix it now rather that later. If the hull, floor and motor are solid you got a nice project boat, only the "fun" $tuff to worry about.
