New guy needs info on 1981 15' ???

Hello!

I just joined this forum looking for information on an old Checkmate I may be buying this week.....

The owner has listed it as a 1981 Checkmate 15 Foot , I went to see it and observed/was told the following...

Originally came with a 6 gallon gas tank upgraded to 19 gallon
came with a 30HP Johnson? Rated up to 115HP?
now has a Merc 900 90HP with 2 blade prop 17P
was originally painted black with a metal flake? (is now re-painted)

was originally a 2 seater, now has 3 more seats in rear all small fold down, swivel

has had a power trim/jack plate put on

It is a very shallow boat, the seats all swivel on the floor.

It "looks" like a Checkmate, but i cannot seem to find the exact model? Is it simply a Checkmate 15???

I am looking for a fun boat that'll pull skiers and tubers? and it needs to fit into my garage, so I feel I have found the 'right' speedboat???

What is the largest sized Checkmate that can roll into a 1 car garage?

Any help with identifyiong the boat I'm looking at is greatly appreciated.... i will call Checkmate with the vin when I get the title in hand!

I plan to spruce her up a bit and then re-paint/re-furbish her in the winter months.... (I'm in SE Michigan)

Thanks-
Johnny

Hard to tell from the pictures. It looks like a predictor, but they are 16'
Have a good look at the boat. Check the floor and transom for rotten wood (soft spots). Do a compression test on the motor. I would say speed is closed to the low 40's the way the boat is set up right now. 50 may be on the speedo.
If you are going to use the boat primarily for skiing then you may want to look for a bit more motor.
Welcome to the board and good luck with the boat.

The wood seems nice and strong.... test driving it tomorrow

....got it!!!!!

.....it took all night, but after a quick test ride I brought my new Checkmate home.... well, it's an '81, but it's new to me! ;)

I will begin re-searching it's lineage in the morning with a call to Checkmate...

I was told this was a very rare 15, perhaps one-of-a-kind?!?!? I don't believe the guy, but he was just passing on info he got when he bought it, so he could be telling the truth?!?!?

I can barely sleep.....

.....wrong spot...:o

...just called Checkmate for more info off my vin, but Mike is out 'till Monday...

.....looks like no news is going to have to be good news, for now!!!

Holy Mix-up!!

I have just looked into the MIC on my 'title' and I was worried because it was not CH It's PEV

Here's what I found...http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_detail.aspx?id=PEV

The 'title' says the Make is Checkmate, but the wind screen on it doesn't match anything I've seen by Checkmate.....

So I may not have a true Checkmate, but perhaps the mold used for my boat was sold to Checkmate when MARINE DEVELOPERS LTD went out of bussiness???

They used to be called SEA RAIDER ....ugh!:(

Well, I am gong to consider it a Prototype Checkmate untill proven otherwise.....

...more strange findings....

...... The title application says it's a 15 foot Checkmate, but the vin has letters that say it's a 1981 MARINE DEVELOPERS LTD ( a Sea Raider) and the measuring tape says it's only 13 feet tip of bow to the transom...

......I'm starting to not care..... going to order some checkmate decals and end the inquisition :cheers
