I am a new member and new to your forum.

Recently purchased a 1977 Checkmate VI. It has a baffle(?) drain plug. Is this original and should it be replaced? I have tried to remove it but it does not unscrew. Can it be replaced with a regular screw in drain plug? :brickwall:

Welcome.

Our mates come with the typical rubber drain plug that you can buy at walmart, meijer, etc. Push it in and give er a few turns to compress the rubber and seal it to the brass sleeve.

The drain plug should be an easy one. I am not trying to be mean, but if you cant figure it out, maybe you should sell the boat and move on.

It should unscrew pretty easy, otherwise the part inside the boat is turning. You may need to grab it with some pliers from the inside, remove it, toss it, and get a new drain plug.

If you could get a picture of it on here that would help. When you say baffel it makes me think of a one way valve that lets water out but not in and you dont remove. I've seen these before sealed in and they dont come out with just a turn or push.

Sounds like a "duckbill" automatic drain. If it is, the rubber is thin and if it tears you will sink at the dock. I would replace it with a good standard style plug.

Thanks for the advice. The boat has been sitting inside for fifteen years, I have had the motor rebuilt and the gas tank flushed. Got to thinking about the drain plug and did not want to chance it being bad. It is a rubber flap style and is supposed to drain the water while in motion. I need to know if there is an easy way to get it out without having to remove the gas tank? I have had several boats in the past but never a Checkmate. It is a great little boat...Thanks for your reply and it helps..getaway
