Hello Everyone
New Checkmate owner here.
Recently acquired a 79 Predictor.
Unfortunately, a prior owner, abused the Evinrude 115, leaving it with a couple of scored cylinders and a cracked lower unit.
It would appear, all I have at this point is a functional power tilt and trim unit, and some parts.
The hull appears to be in very good shape. The interior could use a redo.
I will probably get to that next winter.
I wanted to get some feedback on a current conundrum.
I've got a 74, 70hp, Johnson Stinger II sitting around.
I've toyed with the idea of hanging it off the predictor until a suitable replacement motor appears. (I should express the caveat, until, my personal economic condition improves and I'd like to get some lake time in before the season ends here in Colorado.)
My concern is, the 70hp. just won't be enough for the weight of the hull.
I don't want to over-work the motor and potentially damage it.
Any thoughts, concerns, advice?
thanks in advance

Welcome to the board can't help you with your problem I am I/O maybe somebody will come along :thumb:

as long as the motor can get the boat on a plane, it should be fine. The 70 will not have the top speed of the 115, but should work just fine. Had a 70 rude' on a 17.5" cuddy cabin, and it planed and got to a whopping 31 mph. But could still ski behind it. might as well enjoy the boat season, and then do the work during the off season.

what are the compression numbers on all of the cylinders? if the bad ones are above 85-90psi i would run it for the season! if they are lower than that don't!

Welcome! Slap on the 70hp and run her this season. I have seen a ton of outboards in the fall and winter go real cheap on craigslist.

I would put what ever power you have on it right now to get on the water. if its not enough, re-power it after a while. :thumb:

Thanks for the input

Thanks guys for the suggestions.
I sorta put the project on hold the last few to clean out other projects....
you know, the ones that get in the way.
Gonna see if I can't get her pulled in this week and pull the 115 and do what has to be done.

Thanks again

Welcome to the club! I agree, if the 115 runs, toss some marvel mystery oil in the pre-mix and run it :-)

Thanks for the welcome

I don't think the 115 runs.
I got her with the port head pulled off and bad cylinders visible.
Did not occur to me to put the head back on and do a compression test.
Plus, would have to find a lower: nice big crack in the side of that one.

I'd post pictures, but don't think I've gained the right to do so.
Or
Haven't figured out how to do it on this forum.

It has been raining almost every day here in CO.
I guess, the good news is, the reservoirs should be full.
All that to say, the rain seems to fall right around "let's work on the boat time."

I will admit, I'm getting antsy. June is half over, and have yet to get in any lake time. On the other hand, the weather has been mild and it hasn't really felt like summer. Guess I had better get after it, or I won't be ready when it does.....
