I am a new member from London, Ontario. I played with fast boats in the early 70's while living in Windsor Ontario (18' I/O Sidewinder converted to O/B power with 150 merc). I have come across a Checkmate sitting that probably can be had for a song. It has been sitting in a yard partially covered for some 8 or 9 years on a trailer with a 140 merc (with a "bad cylinder") so I am guessing it is a 72 or 73 vintage. I only looked at it from a "safe" distance.
In my O/B days in Windsor the hot set up was a 14' or 15' Checkmate with either a 140 OMC or Merc (prefered) and this boat looks identical. I'm a pretty fair wood worker and this looks like it could be some fun. What do you think? Any suggestions what model it would be. Is it worth the trouble since I am assuming it will be pretty rotten based on the storage conditions?
