nose cone and prop results

after the whole ordeal with my water pump i was happy to be on the water. i got the pump all back together on thursday. i went right out to the river to test it.

bobs nosecone @ 3" below with my 26P laserII gave me the same speeds as without the cone. i did have to use a bit more trim to get it though. i was running 74-77 with it.

the next day i jacked the engine up 2 inches and put on the 28P merc chopper i purchased last year. its got a super high polish and a little cup added. this thing looks great. immediatly i noticed a difference even when idling through the no wake. it pushed me a bit fasater.

28P chopper @ 1" below had a lot more slip upon take off. once on plain this thing was sonic fast. it accelerates faster than the 26 laserII all the way up. there is waaaay more torque steer with this set up. i will need a torque tab for sure. the river was soooo choppy on friday i was unable to break my top speed of 77.8. i was able to hit 77's but decided to lay off until it was smoother out.

i think ill go out tonight after work. i know its got 80 in it for sure.

Glad to hear you got it working again.
Choppers really rev like a bastard when taking off. there is a fine line between catching and slipping as Im sure you found out.
be sure to keep us updated, 80 is so close

is your plate hydrolic or manual?28 pitch seems small for that much hp I have A 24 spinelli chopper for my inline I hope thats enough

Eighties are just around the corner for you

Glad to see you got it fixed Illmatic, I think you'll hit low eighties with that prop,I hope to do the same soon.I'm switching to a hydralic plate and playing with motor height next time out,I'm running a 14.5 26pitch omc raker right now, spinning it to six grand, I going to try and pickup a 28 raker off of a friend for some more topend ( if there is one this year)busy at home right now. Good luck!

i have a manual plate. its right at .5" below the pad. depending on my results with this 28 i may go bigger next year. we'll see.

Launch with motor that high

How's it out of the hole with the motor that high? is there alot of torquesteer with a chopper that high?I can get a good deal on a 14.5 28pitch chopper , but I have to get it re-hubbed for my omc.

panther, there is a whole lot of torque steer. the chopper props do have alot more slip upon take off. my hole shot is gone compared to my other laserII but is comparable to other boats i have run with.

well i had it out yesterday. i cant seem to break out of the 77's. just as a thought i was going to, i looked back and saw water gushing from my cowl. i let off the gas and a couple gallons of water rushed out from under the cowl. i was still building pressure so i just motored back to the dock.

after i got it home i pulled apart the poppet valve. there is a little rubber valve in there that split from the added water pressure. it was dumping all the overflow water into my cowl instead of out the exhast.

now i know why i just left my set up alone for two years. i keep breaking stuff now that its changed.

At least you didn't LOSE any speed, since you were so close anyway. Most people lose speed going to the nose cone when the boat hadn't reached 80 mph with the standard case. Once you get all the bugs worked out, you'll be able to play with props and height more now!

Tough luck

Sorry to hear of you're bad luck, at least you did'nt do any serious damage. I know how frustrating it can be to be so close to the speed you want , you've got a great boat there, thanks alot bye the way, for all the info so far, I'll post some picks of mine this week, I got the hydralic jack plate from my local dealer today in a parts trade, I'll have it on in the next few days.Hopefully with a good speedo pickup/ working speedo(90mph) and motor height control from the wheel, I can get the most out of this thing. My sons hockey schedule is getting busy, so I don't know if I'll get out again this season, I hope to.

This winter

On top of working on my boat in my spare time, I picked up a little eleven ft mono that will be my ten year old's first boat, it's used and needs some sanding and paint, but will be a good father son project this winter. My son's already asked if he can borrow the 225 for a weekend! I was hoping that he would be the sane one in our family, I guess not eh!

Glad to hear you are up and running. I have a bob's kit just waiting to be installed. I have not done it yet, I want to test with the current set up with the new pad to see how it compares to my prior results. Then I think I am going to plug the top sew holes and test again. After all that is done then the cone will go on. I could handle upper 70's. The boat was running right at 70 before all the bottom work. 10mph would be a nice gain with out touching the motor.

Where is the how to write-up with pic's on the cone install????

Yup! Three on three in the summer, regular season all winter.
Yeah I guess we do the same thing here in Mn. to. They play all year round at the arena's. I am really glad my kids dont play hockey, we travel enough for football, basketball, and track seasons.

hey gus, i think i lost a mile or two ph with the cone and my old setup. i gained it back with the larger prop though. i still have to do some more testing.

i hope to have the fotos of the install up here soon. i dont have internet at the house right now. i spent all my spare funds on the boat.

this weekend i lowered the engine down to an inch below the pad. it seems like it has a bit more bite on the top end. i was able to see 78 mph:bounce:

the water conditions have ben so crappy the last couple times i was out. it is hard to stay on it with the chop.

man, i wish i would have started this sooner.

getting better

i now have 3 different prop test under my belt. im wondering where to go next.

stock 2.4 200 carb

26P laserII 6400-6500 @ 78 mph stock 2" below
28P merc chopper 6300-6400 @ 78 mph polished w/ cup 1" below
29P mazco re3 6200 @ 80.6 mph polished w/ cup even

both the mazco and merc chopper produced alot of lift. the mazco had more. all of them have great acceleration.

i am sure the mazco had a CH more left in it. what should i look for now?

ILL

this one is a bit late but i think this thread could help with some of your prop choices.

the last prop i tried was a 30p HOSS TRITON. this was the largest of the props i have tried to date. the hoss had less slip out of the hole than the mazco and the chopper. the hoss performed more like the 26P laser II but with more top end. midrange was the best out of them all as well.

30P hoss triton w/ the ears thinned and sharpened.
.5" above the pad
6400-6500 rpm @ 81.7 mph.

i was only ably to get 3 attempts at this speed. i feel with more seat time this prop could have produced 84-85 mph.

anybody wanting to go fast should purchase a Hoss.
