Not an owner....yet

Hi folks,

Just wanted to say hello. I'm not an owner yet but I am in pursuit of a 1983 Diplomat. Hoping to pick something up in the fall before everything gets stored away up here. Always been a fan of Checkmate boats! Hopefully I can say that I'm a Checkmate owner soon!

Hey there,

I'm a fellow Diplomat pursuer, love to hear how your search turns up. Keep us posted.

Will do, may have a line on one. I would like to pick something up before they all go into storage for the winter. Also, my wife is on board so you gotta strike while the irons hot!

I checked out the picks of your Panther. Very nice and clean boat. How does it handle water skiers/tubes? I like your style of boat, I've never been in one before. I boat on the St Lawrence river mostly, can get a little choppy. How does a boat like that handle rougher water? Sorry for all the questions, just curious.:D

Hey Marlboro,

Thanks man. I really love the thing.

Not very well. :shakehead: Even the Hamilton Harbour https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll=43.287703,-79.839363&spn=0.102089,0.154324&t=h&z=13 where I boat can be a bit much unless you wait for a calm day. I usually check the local web cams before heading out. The boat sits really low in the water as well and is easily swamped.

Now on to the good. For water skiing it is awsome, I slalom behind it and at 35MPH the wake is just a ripple. I have driven quite a few boats pulling tubers as well and nothing comes close to what I can do to people with the V-Mate. It goes right up on it's side and turns on a dime even at higher speeds. You can throw people in tubes around with just a ridiculous amount of centrifugal force.:D

We use the boat mostly on rivers and very small lakes in the muskoka area so there is really very little chop. In that setting, I'm not sure if I could want another boat. I just feels like a tiny sports sedan and handles like it is on rails. The reason, I too want a diplomat is because I just need more seating for my kids/freinds/kids freinds/kids cousins etc etc. Now is the time i guess, my V-Mate needs a complete restore. I'm definately not getting rid of it, so two boats it is.

Are you looking for an IO or an outboard?

Hi Rick,

Good luck with the restore! I'm surprised to hear you say that it needs it. It certainly doesn't look like it.

I'm looking for an outboard myself. When it comes right down to it, I just love the look of Checkmate boats with an outboard engine hanging off the back. The reason I asked about yours was because my wife caught me peeking at the thread with your pics and commented on how much she liked the boat (didn't get the same reaction with Diplomat picks!). However, the water down here can get a bit rough and I told her that we would probably have less boating days with a boat of that style.

Anyways, I'll let you know if I find anything. Talking with a gentleman in the Toronto area about one. I noticed one in Ottawa just popped up on Kijiji as well.

Yeah, it probably wouldn't if the previous owner hadn't drilled through the hull causing a chain reaction of bad things to happen.

lol thanks.

I went and looked at the Ottawa one. I can PM you my finding if you wish with some of MY pictures. The guy is bat $#!+ crazy asking $4500 for that boat.

I also looked at the St. Catharines one. I can share my findings there as well.

Now an owner!

Was on here about a year ago, was planning on buying something but things just didn't work out last year. Well, I finally found something and pulled the trigger on a 1989 Predictor with a Johnson GT100 outboard hanging off the back. I will get pics up shortly as I know people like the pron.....

The gel needs some love but the interior is in real nice shape for the age. Engine seemed to run strong during test drives.

Of course I took it to the cottage immediately after buying and of course I had problems with it. I'll be starting a trim pump issues thread shortly.....

Anyways, glad to have the boat and glad to be here!

PICS!

O.k. I'll try a few pics here. Not the greatest at the moment. Ill take a few in the driveway and get them posted up.

Yeah the damn spiders followed me home. I walk through a web every morning when I go out to the garage now!

I love the Starliners to Ahoy, just too much for my tow rig at the moment.....

Thanks for the kind words. I'll get some more detailed pics up. The top of the boat is getting milky, needs a buff for sure.
