Old Checkmate race boat info or photos??

Master Wrench

New member
Hello all!! We just purchased an ex Checkmate race boat, its a 1990 25' Convincor. It used to be an APBA "A" class boat and then later changed to a "C" class boat. Its number was 42. Colors were White, Teal and Purple. The name was "Lunatic Fringe" and it was registered last in Maryland. Has anyone seen this boat before or is there a better place to find out any info on it? Pictures? Videos of it racing??

Thanks for any help!!

I live in Maryland, I've never heard of the boat, But you might want to check out this Md. forum http://www.cbpba.com/ . It's the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association.

Also, :welcome: to the Checkmate forum. Where do you boat in Maryland?

Thanks for the quick reply. Im already a member of the CBPBA but thanks anyway. Im the Tech for JAWS Marine in Curtis Bay and keep our boat there so we boat all over the upper Bay around Baltimore down to Annapolis. I personally own a 27' Fountain but am building the Checkmate with a good friend of mine.

Where are you out of?

Welcome aboard John. :)

Kip or one of the guys from the factory might know a little about that boat. Hopefully they'll see your thread and pop in and shed some light on it's history. :thumb:

I know where Jaws is located. I live about 20 minutes away from there, but I usually boat on the Magothy, just because I grew up there and like hanging out at the Island.

Pm Kip Combs that is his board name. Let us know what he says

Ya we will have to get some photos of the rebuild process up here soon. She was in pretty bad shape when we got it so we gutted it and are starting from scratch with an empty hull. Now that she's empty we are starting on the glass and paint work and then onward and upward.

Are you putting it back the way it used to look when it was raced. I think that would look cool. And maybe help the value if thats the way it left the factory. Are any of the photos I posted of the boat or is a boat somebody made into a race boat. Whats in the cabin

Good morning. We thought about putting it back to the original colors of Teal and Purple but we are looking for sponsorships and are looking for a more updated color sceme. Probably going all white with a boot stripe and a deck stripe of some color we just dont know yet. It left the factory as a race boat. No deck hatch no side windows and structure in the cabin only. Single big block with a Bravo 1 and 2 bolsters and a race ferring. I'll get some pictures up soon.

Thanks!

So I decided to give Kip at Checkmate a call today. He took my info and said that he would have to look into it and give me a call back....and he did just that!!!! AMAZING!!! He did what he said he was going to do!! If all manufactuers did what they said we wouldnt be in the shape were in! Anyway....looks like our boat was a factory built race boat. It came with the X-dimension all ready cut and a 3 man bolster with center steering and a Bravo1. Thats about it. The buyer installed the power. A dealer in New York sold it to a guy named Tom Judd(s). Anybody know him? We would love to get some info and pictures.

Big thanks to Kip for helping us out!! THANKS KIP!

Thats how Checkmate rolls brother. Congrats on the new project and look forward to seeing the pics.
