OMC Remote Control Grinding Noise

Before starting the 1988 150 HP V6 Evinrude outboard engine on my boat I pull the remote control lever out so it is in the neutral position. Then as the engine warms up I control the rpms of the engine by moving the remote control lever forward or backward as required. Recently when moving the lever I have noticed a noise like metal grinding against metal. Since I don't know anything about a remote remote control unit I am wondering what I need to do to get rid of the grinding noise. Is there some way to apply lubricant or do I need to replace the whole unit? Advice from anyone that has dealt with this problem will be appreciated.

Wow, 41 views but no advice. I have now decided the unit probably needs to come apart and be checked for any worn parts or maybe just needs to be lubed. Before taking it apart I want to remove it from the boat which means I will need to disconnect the throttle and gear shift cables. Can someone tell me how to disconnect these cables?

I would suggest disconnecting the cables at the motor that way you can remove the whole thing and take it apart on a bench. When you take the engine cover off follow the (2) cables to where they attach to the linkage along the side of intake manifold. I'm not sure hoe yous are attached, but on the older models I had they were attached to the linkage with a nut on stud. There should also be a bracket or plate that holds the cable adjusters in place. If you go to MarineEngines.com and enter your model number info you will also find the engine diagrams. There you find Remote Control section which will give you an exploded view of the parts. Hope this was helpful. Jim

Jim, since I do want to take the unit apart on a bench your input about disconnecting the cables at the motor is helpful, thanks. MarineEngines.com is my normal motor reference site but for some reason it shows a remote control unit that is different than what is installed in my 1988 boat. The 1995 OMC concealed side mount single lever remote control exploded view shown at BOATS.NET is what is installed in my boat.

So call me I'll tell you how to fix it! Generally when this occurs, it's the bushings o the cam pivots or the fast idle lever came loose

Bill, thank you for taking the time this afternoon to discuss my remote control problem with me. Now after looking at the unit again I see, as you said, there is a black cover on the bottom of the unit that holds the cables in place. When I remove this cover and the cables drop down I assume I will find the two cable ends somehow attached to internal parts of the unit. Is my assumption correct? Please advise.

If you shift the control into forward, with the cover off, the cables will come into view and depending on what year it is there will be either cotter pins or there will be a flanged head pin that just pushes out.

also, there will be two yellow red wires you need to disconnect, and it doesn't matter which one goes where when you put it back together

Again thanks Bill for all your helpful input. I plan to remove the remote control unit from my boat after the boat is out of the water at the end of the boating season, sometime in October. Over the winter months I then plan to rebuild it or lube it as needed to get rid of the grinding noise. I will hang on to your phone number in case I need further advice.
