has anyone taken delivery recently or does anyone know what the factory recommends for the care and feeding of new gelcoat ? when i got my 95 they included a bottle of some polish , would like to know what it was / is . in persuit of the ultimate shine..........

Bob. I first use Meguires boat and RV polish to give a deep shine , then I finish that off with Meguires Flagship Wax to protect the finish . Every couple of weeks in between waxing I use Meguires quick spray wax just to keep it looking good . I use Flitz polish for the chrome and stainless steel . I know there are other waxes and polishes out there that are just about equal , but I stick with what works best for me .

thanx 240 .have been using flagship among others . i guess the only way i'm going to look as good as you guys that trailer is to pull it out and buff it every 2 or 3 weeks . where do you run , schroon lake ?

Yep, have a place on Schroon . I just bought the 240 and take delivery May 1rst. Its my first Checkmate and am very much looking foward to it . I had a Mariah 238 and decided it was time to go sporty . I leave the boat in the water all season but take it out to clean every three weeks or so or if I trailer to Lake George or Lake Placid for the day . I am only a mile from the ramp so I usualy walk back to the ramp to pick up the trailer .

hey 240 . just came from my autobody supply . am going to try a new approach (for me) on polishing my gelcoat . don't get me wrong this boat still looks better than a lot of others , but i know there is more to be gained . i am obsessive but will be happy to share what i learn in my quest for the ultimate shine . a little test for anyone interested . invest $25.00 for a new checkmate decal . when you remove the old one you will see factory finish hiding underneath . is the color the same underneath ? is the luster the same as underneath ? if you are using a wax product you may want to compare to an area that you are waxing and an area that you are not waxing , for instance the running surface , isay this because i would expect that the gelcoat as it cures will change some wether or not you wax it or ever take it out of your garage . in my case the color is uniform everywhere . this would tell me that oxidation is not a problem even after 9 years . and any wax product that i may have used does not appear to have yellowed the boat , because it is the same shade where it has never been waxed . the problem for me is the luster . its probably an 8.5 out of a possible 10. we beleive a finer product needs to be tried . as this ordeal progresses i will relay what i find. everyone has an opinion on this subject . sometimes that may be affected by what you sell . i don't sell anything ! another thing that i have found is that a lot of boutique brands of wax /polish , are simply relabled versions of someone elses product remarketed to a niche market , i've probably made this a lot more complicated than it has to be , but when i figure it out a 2 year old will be able to do it . stay tuned ..

hey conv240 ..one other thing ....is schroon lake still the place for the go fast outboard . haven't been there in years , but even saw an article in hot boat mag on the lake and a group of checs and hydro streams etc , ripping up the lake ....

Bob...not too many outboards anymore on Schroon . There are a couple STV's , and a fellow down from me has a hydrostream but that is the only ones I am aware of . Most are the I/O's . There is a Checkmate 280 zt , Warlock 28 cat , 24' fountain , A Donzi 18 and 22 classic and a formula 247 . They still hang out at the manor beach . The state is going to turn that into campsites so I do not know where they will hang out . Probly at the north end . You can put your bow up on the beach but the stern will be floating in 8-10 feet of water . I think thats better than the manor . I hang out there most of the time . ( or just float in the middle of the lake ) Not as crowded . I think Schroon is getting alot of Lake George overflow . Not too many people are going to pay for a lake permit and then $25-$30 to launch their boat at a private marina . The only free state launch on Lake George is at Mosy Point in Ticonderoga , but most people are not going to drive out of thier way so Schroon Lake is a closer destination with no permits or launch fees .

hey 240 ,,,,, guess i shouldn't be surprised that you're getting bigger boats up there , and the lake george over flow ,it ain't just going north , i think thats why we're getting more law enforcement ,you'll have to let the guy with the 280zt know about this site .

Hey 240, Is Sand Point still at Schroon Lake? It is that small campground that used to have a point on it. It was across from the "Word of Life" place. I used to vacation there every year...
