Opinion on possible purchase please

I've been trying to find a good Checkmate to jump on since last August and there just aren't many that come up in the Toronto area. This one was listed shortly after I lost out on a seemingly awesome deal (2010 2100 for 29,000CAD). I didn't pay much attention originally because I was trying to sort out going to see the 2010 (which sold exceptionally quickly). I'm nervous that the floor was replaced in less than a decade of this persons ownership. I'm also not sure why they would end up with 2 checkmates and worried that they would be keeping all of the "best" components for their remaining check and dumping all the lower end items on this. For example, it has been posted with two trailers pictured, they list "options" that they will swap between boats depending on how much you want. Anyone familiar with this particular boat, or have anything to say in general?

I am a little bit nervous about the phrasing of the advertisement, but that could just be the voice of someone that is a veteran of being reamed by people on the Internet trying to sell things. I am a little curious about the floor, maybe someone with knowledge of this era can comment. The boat has only 120 hours - maybe they just mean it's glassed marine plywood from the factory? If this falls through, there's another Checkmate I have seen on highway 11 for about a month now:

Hard to believe the floor has been replaced already with those hours. I'd call him and ask for details on it. Not a bad price.

I am in the same boat as you. The floor and listed "options" concern me. Can anyone corroborate the statement that that era Checkmates had bad floors?

That 18 foot Checkmate from Double R looks like a heck of a deal does it not? I wasn't considering 18' but that might be worth it. Of course my boating is all on Georgian Bay so I was hoping to stay at least 21.
 
With a wake board tower, that floor was soaking wet all season long. I took my starflite up to Topermory a few times and enjoyed 5 fathom national park, flower pot island and the grotto. I'll be heading up end of july with my 24 ZT, When I go up, I stay at the big tub hotel with a boat slip 40' from my door. Great Times, Anyway good luck with your choice. :cheers:

I'm 99% certain that Checkmate at Double R is a 21, not an 18. I think they have it classified wrong on their web site. I have driven by it twice a weekend since they put it out on the lawn and it looks too big to be an 18. Besides, it's a closed deck and I don't think Checkmate made the Pulsare in an 18 closed deck. Double R also has a Tuff 16 out on their lawn and that Checkmate looks twice as big. I don't want to send anyone on a wild goose chase, but I seriously doubt that Checkmate at Double R is an 18. Maybe give them a call and see what they say about it.

the boat at double r is a 21. i've seen it a few times now, it is no 18.

If you look in the restoration threads you'll find 21' Pulsare's with floor replacements. Unfortunately floor rot happens behind the passenger seat where folks climb in and out of the boat from the water. Also where the battery and oil tank are mounted and under the pedestal seats. CM went to liner interior in later years, not sure of the year though.
 
I don't think it's one 100% fair to say its typical. Buying used boats from your typical boater makes that happen. 201,000 veiws on the Craigslist finds thread?? That figure is amazing and enlightening if you think about it.

I don't find the ad that suspicious. Although it is ridden jerk-like. He upgraded some items on boat and has boat a new 2100 and is going to move the upgrades over. There is nothing wrong with the original equipment. In fact chances are it has been in his garage with little use. In fact in less you want the wakeboard tower you don't need the rest.

As for the floor, it is true for these boats that have spent a lot of time wet. He says it is kept out of the water. It is possible it kept getting put away wet. However, this guy seems pretty anal. My guess is he got it fixed properly.

No price is ever firm. It is only worth what someone will pay for it. However I think it is not a bad price. I sold my 1985 Starliner for 14,500. For our US friends, we pay a lot more for boats in Canada:(.

Maybe I should've phased it different, but I do agree it's the typical boater that causes most problems. The typical part I was talking about was floor rot in used boats. There's folks that buy boats thinking they're waterproof, of course we know different. All the boats I've owned are stored in a garage/carport with a cover on it when not using them. Of course I'm anal about my toys.:o I noticed the views as well on CL, guess lots of folks are looking for that diamond in the rough.
 
I agree not an 18 . 21 for sure as I drive by it looks long

The boat at Double R looks like the winner. We take the 400N so I've not seen the boat before. Has anyone seen it up close? Is anyone familiar with the boat or previous owner? Does it not seem priced too low for a dealer boat?

I've reached out to Double R for some additional information but if anyone knows anything please let me know. I wont be in the area again until Canada Day weekend so I may miss out on it if it moves quickly.

It does look nice in the pics. The 200 is a regular EFI (not opti) and so my guess is it is an older Pulsare 2100 that got a new paint job. It seems like a good price to get into a 21' Mate. I don't think it will last at that price, and if you miss it you will have to pony up 500k for the Nor-tech Roadster http://www.doublerperformance.com/i...6-31-40-ft/336-2014-nor-tech-4000-roadster-me
 
The one at RR has been infront of their shop for about a month now, but it is probably seen by 10s if not 100s of thousands of people a weekend. I have not seen it up close, but seen it probably 10 times, looks nice from the road :)
 
They aren't getting back to me, maybe they already have a buyer! I'll try again this afternoon.

Any general comments on that era checkmate for a new buyer? We're near Killbear provincial park so a typical day would probably bring 1-3ft water and if we get caught out 4ft+. I'm still trying to decide whether I should be looking at something like this which is what I really want, or something slower/family friendly/rough water capable with a 150 to keep possible maintenance costs lower.

I live 5 minutes from DoubleR. I could take a drive up tomorrow if you wish. They had another Mate out front yesterday and today as well. Lemme know.
 
Spoke with them today. Boat has a wrap and is in "okay" (weathered) condition. Had a new "long block" installed recently. Between that and the comment above that a Pulsare 21 in 2-3ft water is a bad combination the attractive price might not be worth it.
