Optimum outboard for Playmate GT?

Ok according to my coastguard manual.

Length x width = your factor So 13 x 5.5 = 71.5

Take the 71.5 x 2 = 143 now subtract 90 and this gives you 53 then it says to round up.

so 55hp is what the math shows.

The horsepower rating comes from the length/width coast guard formula unfortunately. I dont know of anyone that's run one with over 60 horse besides the one here with a 90.
I wonder whatever happened to the yellow one that Gary had? Didn't it have a 70 'Rude on it when it was for sale?

Obviously ill have to say go for the yammi , its funny that at least here in washington they go for less money seems like guys just cant get passed the BIG BAD MERC look. I will say it was a good look this summer when we were at the scream and fly meeting with the mercs having there cowlings off , my old yammi was still on with no probs.:D . Im not sure but did they make a pro-v yamaha 70hp or 90hp I know there was a 50 pro v on ebay a bit a go.

Hi

I have a 80/90 Yammi on my 88 Playmate. The max. speed with a 20p Lightspeed (Laser 2) is 52mph. I have no chinewalk with a 5 Inch setback- custumplate (10 pounds) and the propshaft 3,25 inch below. The holeshot with two people is very good.
I thing the 90 E-Tec is to heavy for a good allrond-setup and the 60 E-Tec is not enough for fun.
We had test a another boat with 90 E-Tec and 90 Yammi.
The Yammi is faster and better out of the hole.

I agree that Yammi's are reliable but, when it comes to performance I don't.

A few yrs ago a friend of mine had a 17 ft Hydrasports with a 90hp rude' and desided to buy a new 90hp yamaha. Both o/b had the stock props and the yamaha ran 9 mph's slower and very poor out of the hole.
Even after adding a j/p with 6" s/b and 5 diff props it still never ran as good as the rude' did. Then he gave up and sold the boat.

Cooperride, is that subtract 90 a standard number use for all boats..
Sort of yes. That number is for remote steering and at least a 20in transom.

If you have no remote steering(tiller) or less than a 20 inch transom the you use this (0.5 X Factor)-15 for flat bottom boats. Or
use (0.8 X Factor)-25 for other boats. (although I don't see what "other boats" they were talking about yet.

As for all the math that I have to do on this boat, the HP is the easiest, to do. I've got safe loading, maximum weight, level floatation, etc.

The 90 rude is a 4 cylinder with 99 cubic inches and 300Ibs. This is better for a 17ft-boat.
I thing for a 13 GT is the rude to heavy for a goot allround-setup.

Thanks for the input, Hubert.

That's pretty much what I expected between the 'Rude and Yammi, given the weight difference.

Also, not that 52mph for a 13' mono-boat is slow by any means, but I would have expected even somewhat more than that, with a big 90hp on the back (especially given the relatively normal weight loading afforded with that particular motor). Maybe the boat hull design is maxxed-out at that point?
