Optium Engine for aplication ?

I have a boat that isn't finished yet, I have 70 hrs in R&R, and it will be a wild ride when done. It is a 1979 Starcraft, I heard it was nicknamed the ~ wedge~ back in the day. It is 20ft long and is ~ Identical~ in looks and design as the 1981 20ft Centurion Jet boat , low profile hull, looks kinda like a surf board.

I have been told that this model had ~ NO~ HP rating, was listed like the Centurion as ~ Unlimited~

So I would like to take this chance for ~ everyone here~ to give me ideas for a good ~ set up~ I have in mind the engine I want to use ;) so with that said

Let this fun ~ Poll ~ begin .. lol

I forgot to mention that it is a ~ out board~ boat

x2 on the pics, need weight and what kind of a v it is.

I'll work on some pics they are pics of the work being done, it's not finished yet. There is hardly any V in the Back and the total Depth of the boat is not more than 2 ft at the windshield very low profile.
Adding pics to my photobucket page now.

I will have to get official weight in the spring when I can get boat and trailer weighted but I think the boat shell weights 1,200 lbs

there are 2 pics ( I haven't worked on this one since 2006 ) bad move decision, that cost me the 42x80 pole barn that was my shop now I'm re working my 30 x 30 garage into my shop for now.. ;)

I'm kinda leaning towards a merc 300 hp , or a v-8 johnson depending on the weight ;)

1200# is alot of weight... I think your on the right track with some torque.

The V8 would be cool, but I think a 300hp merc would hold its value better and be alot better on fuel. It doesn't sound, or look like its an everyday, all around boat. The V8s are cheaper and I think it depends on how much you are going to use it...

Both the 300 mercs and v8 omcs are heavy.

I vote for an omc V8, its unique.

When I get the boat weighted in the spring I will know more, I know my friend that has a I/O boat that is just about a twinn to this outboard model his has no hp limit and he had a 450-500 hp small block chevy in it and it would scoot across the lake at the mid 80's on gps with 3 adult men in the boat..
This surfboard could cruise well in the 90-100 mph range with the right setup, I haven't added any seats, what you see in the 2 pics is how I will get the boat weighted -- bare--, then the seats, and all will be added and re- weighted..
I want to ~have a high out put~ mota that has a lighter weight.. ( the transom is now 2 times the thickness of the factory ~ whimpy~ looking stuff that was there ) ;)

Reed, I have the perfect engine for you. I mariner 50ELO!! LOL perfect light weight mota!

I would think the drawbacks to the 300 merc and the V8 omc is weight and price. I would think you could mod a 2.4 merc to have the same power with less weight and for less money. Not that I really know what I am talking about. I am real good in paint. Wrenching, I know enough to get into a lot of trouble and just enough to get out of some of it!!!
