Paint, Gelcoat, or Wrap it?

Hi everyone. I have a 87 251 convincor that the red and black are really faded. I was looking to wrap it but im also wondering how paint would work and hold up, and does gelcoat go on with a special gun or can you use the same kind of spray gun as you do with paint. Im up for ANY replies so feel frr, Thanks, John.

how faded? have you tried aqua buff to bring it back? do you have any pictures of it? i have seem some of the boat wraps and was very impressed. the guy said that you can wax it and everything like normal

depending on what you do with a wrap & who does it it may be comperable to a basic paint job. Gelcoating uses a similar gun to paint however its spray nozzle is very very large in comparison to a paint gun. And the guns can even be larger when a mfg is laying up a boat in a mold.. ;) Jamie / Lakeside

To help answer your question. Gel coat goes on when the boat is build. its is done on the inside, is costly limits the graphics you can do and is done with a special gun and process. Paint gives you more options, is applied to the outside and is a costly process as well (2000-20,000) depending on the depth and graphics your looking for. A wrap gives you the best options for the money. It last 5-8 years with no fading. It can be any range of colors or graphics for the same cost. It can be removed after you tired of the graphic and the cost is less than either option. It is semi-perminate.
Paint and gel coat will last the longest but also cost 2-4 times the amount and give you less options visually. A wrap (depending on the coverage) runs $2000-4500 installed and will give you effects not even painters can produce. Well maybe for 5-10x the cost. Give it some thought. The material they use these days is strong, looks great and will not come off (they use the same stuff in NASCAR) If your reall interested contact us back and we can send over images of the befoe and after of the boat we had done. We had the same issue with fading and have not regreted one minute the choice to wrap our boat. We turn heads everywhere we go. Contact us back for more info. Thanks

1st. I am not here to advertise but if I can help out my checkmate brothers and sisters please let me know. Again sorry if this seems like a plug or advertisement.

Cost is about $2000-4500. We do these wraps and was at the Customer appreciation day at checkmate 2 weeks ago. Everyone seemed impressed and they even let us promo for the day. CHECKMATE WAS GREAT. The only limit is your imagination.I also agree you need good installers to make this work. I have many people mistake the wrap for airbrushing and paint. We can do it, do it right and for a good price. We are professional and very easy to work with. We offer proofs and renderings with it on yout boat before so can see the results. 734-482-2126. Ask for Paul. Wraps are the future.

I seen this one on craigslist and it is done in a wrap. No checkmate but still a cool boat:thumb:

Are there any 'Do It Yourself' possibilities with this wrap concept, in solid colors (no graphics?)
I did a little online research and found that 3M sells some 2mil material in a variety of colors (including metallic), but I have no idea what the materials cost or how feasible it is for an amateur to apply this stuff.
I'm just thinking that this may be an alternative to the old 'roll and tip' paint.
Also, I wonder how this stuff holds up under foot.

Decision is made.......

I am going to wrap the boat in vinal this spring and I would like to know who does graphic work and could send me some pics of a (87 ish) convincor and or some unusual ideas. Thanks, John

Time to become a supporting vendor.

Ok, been in the viynl business for 22 years and we now are doing more and more wraps, the cost as stated is close, depending on artwork and how much you are trying to wrap, they have limitations and some areas are tuff to get to look good, and that leads me to almost all wraps have a busy background to help hide imperfections, sharp lines/curves are the trouble areas. They do look awsome and with the new technology in viynl and digital printers lasting not a big deal, but hitting things and rubbing on a dock or another boat is a downside as they can be hard to repair, I have the same boat as you and painted some and smaller sections of wrap type graphics....Rob
