Paint

Just picked up a 17 foot '86 Sportfire. The interior is ok looking but solid. The exterior has a crappy paint job. The original color was yellow/black, but someone painted it red. It has a Merc 115 o/b that fired up and idled fine in the previous owner's driveway, but then would not fire after I bought it and towed it 300+ miles. I dropped it off with a mechanic I know. If the motor is ok, then I am debating a new paint job. How much could one expect to pay for a single color paint job that's fairly decent? This is no show boat like some I have seen here, but I'm hoping she is a good runner. Also - does anyone know a good boat painter in upstate NY?

Engine

By the way, the Merc 115 is the old inline 6 "Tower of Power". I am guessing it's of similar year (1986). I'm wondering what people think of this engine? Seems to be a lot of hype about it on the net. A surprising number of people commented on it when I towed the boat home.

well the paint depends on whether you are going to paint or new gel coat. there are a couple ppl on here that do paint/gel coat. so hopefully they will pipe in with a price
est. as for the engine it is good and does great on the back of these small boats. good luck with the repairs!!!

vtwin,

I am going to refinish the hull of my boat myself; right now I'm down to Imron or Awlcraft 2000; it will be one of the 2. Heres a link that explains some of the differences. Also do a google search Imron vs Awlgrip; you'll find some good resources. Good Luck:)

I paint with Awlgrip every day. Awlcraft is a sandable softer paint than its big brother with a few less years shine in the long run. The awlgrip product line is fantastic. I make my living with it so i will put my name on it. I haven't used emron, But i would wear a fresh air respirator to apply it...

That would be great:bigthumb:. let me know the best way to contact you. I spend most of my summers on Priest and Center Hill and once I finish my refurb I plan on getting out on Old Hickory more often. I just bought a 83 Enforcer; in the process of tearing out the foam. Pretty much gutted the inside; cockpit and cabin. i had the intention of starting a blog this weekend but ran out of time.

BTW whats your opinion of House of Kolor paints?

House of kolor is all we use for our graphics on the go fast boats that we repair. It seems to merge well with the gelcoat and glass, and awlgrip paints recommend HOK be used over there brand off paints rather than PPG or lessonal. the graphics on my boat are done in HOK and the fire really stands out...

Thats really good to know; I plan on using white awlgrip and then HOK blue pearl for my graphics. I was hoping they would be compatible:)

vtwin4life,

Sorry about highjacking your thread; I don't think we were too far off topic.:D BTW awlgrip if i remember correctly is about $60-80 per gallon. You will also need the awlgrip primer and I think it is roughly the same cost. You can call their customer service and probably get them to help you determine the # of gallons it will take to cover your boat. Sounds like Heatseeker may have a few answers regarding this one.

OOPS! That paint is more like $150-175 per gallon:brickwall:. Don't know were I saw that other stuff for sale:o Oh well, I'll still be using it.

After picking my self up off the floor at the auto paint supply place, sticker shock big time. Automotive paint has gone through the roof price wise.
I started searching for some paint for the trimate.
I found this. http://www.nationalpaintsupply.com/...y/0,10853,4682-123795-125102-nav-list,00.html

I ordered there 2 part epoxy primer and paint. The primer is a dream to work with. Covers very well and at 10ml thick its 100% water proof. Real easy to apply and sands very well by hand or with a da.
The pant has great coverage and build. If you have a look at my overhaul thread there are pic's of both the primer and the paint. I did sand and buff the top side of the boat to give the wet look. Came out very well.
Price wise its hard to beat. If I remember right I bought 3 gal each of part A and B primer, 3 gal of yellow, 1 gal of black, 3 gal of wax remover, 3 gal of reducer. Came to around $800 total. I still have a gal each of the primer and a gal of yellow left. May have to paint the trailer.

Yep about 150.00 to 275.00 pr gallon depending on color. That includes 1 gallon of paint, one gallon of converter , and 1 gallon of the reducer. There are 10 kinds of reducer. Depending on where you are and if you are going to be in a climate controlled spray booth, make the right choice the first time . You don't want to have to sand that stuff off and reshoot it. It will say right on the can of reducer what it is. Pretty self explanitory. The reducer does have temp restrictions on it. And when it says shoot between 59 and 70 degrees it doesn't mean 58 or maybe 72. be very precise when mixing and shooting(or rolling). If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. Bye the way, i got my old screen name back....no more heatseeker

Blue Water Marine.....that's the paint I remember for $60-80. I saw that someone on S&F had good results w/ it. It's good to know that there may be lower cost alternatives:thumb:

Disturbed,

Awlgrip is alot less expensive than ppg products(concept). I nearly fell over at $300 per gal:irked:. You mentioned rolling; can I really get good results applying awlgrip that way? It seems it might require more sanding and buffing. I also noticed on their spec sheet that rolling would give more coverage per sq/ft and only required 2 coats. Is that due to less waste? and maybe more even application?

In order to roll awlgrip(originally awlgrip was designed to be rolled) you need to thin it downquite a bit and roll several coats so you don't get that textured orange peel look. I know what the sheet says about two times, and it will cover with that. but thin it down and roll on five coats and you will be much more pleased(it will look like a car).Just remeber that when you roll it, wait about 2 minutes and roll back over what you rolled very lightly to pop all the air bubbles. get as much paint out of the roller as you can before to do the roll over. This will save you the trouble of trying to TIP after you roll. Tipping is were most people screw up their paint job...

Disturbed,

Thanks, I'll be intouch once I get closer to painting. I have alot of prep work to do first. I'm going to get my stringers out and repair the transom: then I'll begin the hull and deck prep. Thanks for all your tips. Be on the eye for a PM. Have a Merry Christmas!

Rolling with a foam roller and tipping off is not to bad..done it several times, just never used awlgrip, used interlux poly, have used both the 2 part and the one part, both work well, read and follow the instructions, temp/time of day !!! can be water sanded and buffed.
