I have an old 1986 Checkmate 17ft. with a 470 I/O. The coupler between the engine and outdrive is always going bad. what could be causing this to happen???????????????

I never had coupler problems yet. But my 02 would be that you have bad engine an drive alignment. Are your engine mounts loose, maybe the floor/runners are rotton causeing the engine to twist.

Maybe somebody else can chime in an give their thoughts

To throw another idea out there, are you at times running the drive in gear with the drive pulled up beyond it's normal range of trim? In other words, are you using the 'trailer' button while underway?

It's a possibility that the trailer button is sometimes used while underway. I'm not the only one who drives the boat.Only god knows what they do with it. I'm just the guy who has to keep it running.

running the trim above its limit will damage the u-joints/bell housing. Engine mis- alignment is what damages an engine coupler, that and not greasing it on a regular basis.

I can change my oil and spark plugs but don't know nothin bout out drives and such. Thanks for your input!

I assume you had the coupler installed. The dealership should have aligned your engine when they re-installed it. Should your stringers had issues they surely should have informed you.

The dealership may have forgot to lock your engine mounts, in which case you'll see one side of the engine sitting lower than the other, or notice the nut on top of the motor mount isn't tight.. that would mean the engine mount was not locked, and the adjusting nut dropped allowing the engine to move, damaging your coupler. Tightning this bolt will not solve your problem, it will make it worse. The drive needs to be removed, coupler, gimball bearing inspected and replaced as necessary.

Should this repair done recently I certanly would hope the dealership would stand behind thier work.

est times for repair

engine remove and install 4.0 hrs
remove/install coupler 0.5 hrs
engine alignment 1.0 hrs
