Well i picked up another checkmate last friday. Its a 79 predictor. I already own a 82 enchanter and i love these hull styles. Couldnt pass it up....it had an 80hp mariner on it that had bad electrical problems/fire. It looked like all of the wires were cooked on that thing. I had bigger hp plans in mind anyways so i asked him if he would just sell the hull and trailer...$500 later and a 30min trip and its in my driveway. It is all original with a decent interior. I was told by the PO that the gel coat was un-restorable. I kind of thought otherwise. So After getting frustrated while trying to buff out the cleared top on my enchanter i messed with the predictor a litte. I wet sanded with 1200 followed by 1500 then 2000. Followed that up with presta ulitimate cut compound on one of there heavy cut pads. Here is the pics. It shined up pretty nice but not quite like glass. Im thinking about trying the other side with 800 first...then move up from there. Also going to try to get a polish with some sort of foam pad to finish it off. It will never be perfect as there are alot of little weather cracks in the gel but if anyone has any tips to make it shine more let me know. Here is a couple pics.
