Tach Hookup
My Teleflex tach has three terminals. Ignition (hot when ignition is on, off when ignition is off), Ground, and Sender (hook to rectifier). Yours is different from mine because yours should be ADI if it's that new (no distributor). According to the diagrams I have of an 80-89 inline, there is a gray wire coming from your rectifier and going towards the control box.
The problem I'm having is that I can't see a control box with your engine connector and a 4 prong dash harness. I see a 5 prong plug that only uses 4 of the connections.
On that one, you would have Purple Wire (1 o'clock position), Gray Wire (3 o'clock position), Tan Wire (5 o'clock position) and Black Wire (7 o'clock position) going into the connector. The center prong is not used. If this sounds like what you have, either Tan or Purple should become hot when the ignition turns on. Test this with a volt/ohm meter. That one would be the ignition lead to the tach. Hook the Black (7 o'clock position - test with volt/ohm meter if in doubt) to the ground lead on the tach. Hook the Gray (3 o'clock position) lead to the sender lead on the tach.
I'll be glad to scan this page and email it to you, but it will be Wednesday before I'm home again to do so. See if any of my ramblings make sense.
