IT SEEMS THAT MOST PEOPLE THINK THE TEMPEST PLUS IS THE WAY TO GO ON A PULSARE. I CAN'T HELP TO WONDER WHAT A LASER II, TROPHY PLUS, REVOLUTION 4 OR EVEN A MAXIMUS MIGHT DO. IF ONLY LAKE X WAS MY BACKYARD AND FUNDS WERE UNLIMITED!!!

This is a question I've pondered for years now. I've got a huge collection of e-mail, magazines and various phone conversations on what prop to turn on my pulsare. It always boils down to a Trophy or Tempest, mainly because they are the most readily available and least expensive up front. I'm using a hydromotive cleaver right now, that everyone would tell you can't be used on a Checkmate, yet it makes that hull seem 400 pounds lighter and doesn't blowout with the engine set at 1" below the pad. It's too much pitch, but it's made me think about trying a smaller pitched wheel of theirs. If you don't have access to other props, and not a ton of money like me, you have to think of the stuff others have tried and recommended. Sorry I'm not much help, but it's kinda frustrating when you don't have a Lake X to dial it in!

CHECKMARK, YOU ARE RIGHT ON THE MONEY, LACK OF FUNDS AND SPARE PROPS CAN MAKE YOU CRAZY WHEN TRYING TO GET THE MOST OF YOUR RIG. I'VE HEARD OF SOME MARINE PARTS DEALERS THAT WILL LET YOU TRY NUMEROUS PROPS AS LONG AS YOU PAY UP FRONT FOR THE NEW ONE. THEY HAVE USED PROPS THAT THEY USE FOR DEMOS, HOWEVER THEY ARE NOT LOCATED NEAR ME.

This is true, I have had Marine stores let me borrow a prop to try out with a deposit. It is to big of a investment to buy one that might not work well on your boat.

To bad your not closer Jupiter,I would let you try my Tempest out.I think I need a 25 pitch.I found a used on on this forum but it was as much as new.

FNSHRMASTER, THAT WOULD BE A LONG DRIVE TO TRY OUT A PROP!!!

I THINK I'M GOING TO TRY LOOKING AT SOME MARINE REPAIR STORES. THEY SOMETIMES HAVE SOME USED PROPS FOR SALE.

I have done quite a bit of prop experimentation with the same boat/motor combination as you have. Thanks to a great Merc dealer in the Twin Cities (Supreme Marine) & friends who are into high performance boating I have been able to try Trophys, Tempests, Laser IIs, a High 5, Spinelli 3 & 4 blade, Mach 3 blades, Choppers & a DAH modified OMC SRX. I also tried a couple more Merc props but I do not remember their names. My favorite through hub prop is the Mach. They used to come standard from Checkmate but they are not available anymore. The Tempest might be a tic faster than the Laser II but hole shot is worse. 25" pitch is your best bet although for water skiing or operation with a boat full of people a 23" works better. I like Chopper style props for boating with a light load. Hole shot isn't terrible & they will give at least a couple of extra mph up top. You will need a 26" pitch with a chopper. DAH in Wisconsin reworks OMC SRX chopper style props for Merc applications. This is a custom, balanced, blueprinted, & polished prop for a reasonable price for what you get. They work great. I have done enough tinkering with my boat to be able to run a 27" DAH but 26" would be better for a stock set-up. If you have to live with just one prop, I would go with the 25" Laser II or Tempest depending on how you feel about hole shot. However, it's always a good idea to have a spare prop around "just in case" & if you do a lot of boating with a light load, a chopper is a real kick due to lots of bow lift. By the way, Supreme always seems to have quite a few used stainless props laying around. Might be worth it to give them a call.

RAN MY PULSARE/225 XRI WITH A TEMPEST 26. WITH PLUGS IN ALL THREE HOLES IT WAS A DOG OUT OF THE HOLE BUT REACHED 66-67 GPS MPH WITH A FULL TANK OF GAS AND THREE PEOPLE ON BOARD. TRIED REMOVING ALL THREE PLUGS BUT THE PROP WOULD BLOW OUT AND SPIN LIKE A BLENDER BEFORE BITING. PUT 2 PLUGS BACK IN AND HOLESHOT WAS RESPECTALBLE WITH STRONG MIDRANGE ACCELERATION AND REACHED 5400 RPM AT ABOUT 68+ MPH. STILL HAD SOME CHINE WALKING ISSUES BUT MORE CONTROLABLE THAN MY OLD PROP. MY FRIEND RUNS THIS TEMPEST 26 ON HIS 1986 STARFLITE/225 OPTIMAX AND CAN HIT THE REV LIMITERS. I WOULD ASSUME THAT MY 1995 225XRI WOULD BE ABLE TO SPIN THE PROP EQUALLY. I AM GOING TO HAVE MY MOTOR CHECKED OUT TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS 100%.
