Im brand new into powered boats and Im having a small dilema. I bought the boat (79' Eluder) from a local guy who used and abused it. I got it lookin pretty good now but still have no electronics yet. The boat has a merc. 135 on it and im not sure of the prop. The guy said it was off of a 85 or 90 horse motor, it has 16 degree pitch, and it runs fine..... Yes the motor runs fine but you can hear it screamin and its not goin very fast. I didnt get a speedo reading on it because ive yet to hook it up. I know by ear the rpms are way to high. It seems like it should have so much more speed and performance but my prop is just holdong it back. What are some specifics on a prop that I may need? Thanks, Jason

Definitely start w/ a 21 and get your tach hooked up. Speedo readings are inaccurate, youll need to verify via GPS.

Ok heres another question, i forgot to mention this. The head of the motor is a 135 it has a 115 lower unit, now when i go to buy a prop am i going to be buying it to fit a 115? Are there different splines on the units or what? Also what is the biggest diameter I could safely use? Thanks!

You really need to find out exactly what power you have there. Is that an in-line 135 hp? If so then it's not a 1979 model as they didn't build one then. ( 90 hp, 115, 140 yes) but not an in-line 135. If it's a V-6 135 hp well then it's much newer than 1979 but I doubt that it would have a 115 hp gearcase on it. The simple answer is take it to a GOOD Mercury dealer and have them identify exactly what you have.
But bottom line is you still need a higher pitch prop than what you are currently running. Again the dealer can recomend something to get you in the ballpark once you know what it is you exactly have. The last year Mercury produced an in-line 135 hp was 1971.
