Prop recommendation

Hello folks!! I'm a Newbie but glad to be a part of the Checkmate Owner's "guild"! I was fortunate enough to pick up a 1978 Predictor w/a Merc 900 this week....for $1000.00 !!! Runs great, sound all over, needs a little cosmetic work...nothing major.

We had it out on Higgins Lake in MI. Found the "buried" island with the prop!

Being a former boat owner, I know it's important to have a spare...doing that.

Can anyone suggest a prop for this boat/engine? Right now with the factory (not sure of pitch) it jumps out of the water and max's out at about 37 mph at 5K rpm.

So, I could sacrifice a little low end to get a higher top speed. I'm not interested in 60 mph ;) but would like to be a little faster. I want it to be a safe top speed. I will likely just replace the factory prop for my spare.

Thanks to any and all input. I'm sure I'll have other questions...again very happy to be a part of the program!!!

Welcome to the board! Congrats on the good buy too. It's not going to easy to rec. The perfect prob as I'm not sure there are too many people here who have a similar setup. Thats not a very big motor for stArters. If it were my boat, I'd go off what I just wrecked and pick up a cheap aluminum prop, run Some speed and rpm numbers and then from that buy a better stainless prop. Then you can stash your aluminum prop for a spare. 5k rpms seems to be a good max, so your old prop was likely close. You can probably do better on the prop quality though. Actually, you have it pretty easy in this case. Both of your props will likely cost you half of what some of us dingbats are paying just for one!:eyecrazy:

Thanks! I think the one on it now is a 15 pitch. I had a vendor suggest a 19 pitch which seemed to be a big jump.

I'll follow your lead though...thanks.
