'87 21' starflite with a 12 inch vance jack plate.... what would be the best hieght for me to set this up at? any info will help!!

Depends on your prop of course. Do you have a small diameter or large diameter prop? Small = Laser II, Trophy, etc. Large = Tempest Plus, Mirage, etc.

I like to start my boats at 4" below the pad, and run the motor up 1/2" between top speed runs until I lose water pressure and/or speed at best top speed, then lower the motor 1/4". If that height works well for all-around, I leave it there. If not, I keep going down 1/4" until I'm satisfied.

not sure what size prop is on it right now- it is in storage..... it will be coming out soon! what is the best size and pitch for this boat?

Prop size and pitch and brand and model is like talking religion. Everyone has a different opinion :rof:

GENERAL rule of thumb is small diameter prop for shorter or heavier boats and buried propshaft, larger diameter props for lighter or longer boats and higher propshaft.

i don't think my prop diameter is much more than 10 or 11 inches.... don't know for sure! if i was to put a larger diameter prop on than u would measure from the center of the prop shaft to the bottom of the hull? also i'm running a 1987 200 black max merc.....

Your prop diameter may be around 13 3/4" if it's a small diameter and somewhere around 14" if it's a large diameter. Be easier if you told us what model and pitch it is, then it's easier to determine. The diameter is what you'd get if you drew a perfect circle that the 3 (or 4 or 5) blades fit into. In other words, overall spinning diameter.
Yes, propshaft height is best measured from the bottom of the hull to the centerline of the propshaft.

this might sound dumb but where on the prop will it say the brand or pitch? the prop that is on it now is the same one when i bought it last june! remember i won't have it out of storage till the earleist this weekend but chances are not till next... we still have 10-12 inches of snow on the ground!!! SUCKS!

With your setup...a cupped prop like a Trophy or a Tempest, you will probably end up with the center of the prop shaft at right around 2 1/2" below the Vee. If you go higher you will likely lose bow lift and your speed will drop. If you have a cheap aluminum prop you will need to upgrade to a good SS. I like a 24" Powertech TRO4 for your rig.
