propeller & setback

I have a Starflight with a 200 Merc. I would like to know the performance difference between over the hub and through hub propellers. I have read that the Tempest is a good prop for my boat, but most racers appear to use over hub props. I also purchased a hydraulic jackplate, which will give me 6" of setback. The boat has a step hull. Do I need more setback to achieve maximum proformance for this setup? Thanks, new guy...

Because of the notched hull, you'll actually have over 10" of setback when using a 6" setback plate. The farther you go back, the faster you'll be, and the more your transom will crack. Over hub props are for light weight boats, you probably won't be happy with one on a long heavy Starflight. The Tempest Plus has been the best so far for top speed and general use........Try a 23" or 25" to start.

JW, Thanks for the advise. I think I'll stay with the 6" jackplate and a Tempest Prop. I have been looking into ways to add support to the transom to prevent damage. My next question is, will the smaller 23" prop turn more RPM's than a 25"?

All things being equal, both props as new and no manufacturing defects, and same make/model, a 23" prop will spin about 300-500 rpms higher than a 25" prop on your tachometer. I spun a 23" Tempest to 6450 rpms at best speed on my Pulsare/Promax, which was perfect for all around use as my promax had a 6500 rpm recommended limit. If you have a stock 200 Merc, you'll want to prop it to spin to around 5700 rpms at best top speed. Friend of mine has a 225 3.0 EFI motor on his starflight, and he spins a 25" Tempest. Your rig will most likely spin a 23" Tempest.
