pulsare, best setup?

Well-known member
so whats the best combo for a pulsare 2100BR? which motor, how much setup, what kind of speeds. looking for the best of both worlds(like everyone) for top speed and usefulness with family and skiing.

I don't know if this is the best, but I am very happy with it:
2007 Pulsare
250 Pro XS
10" set back, hyd. jack plate
27P Tempest - top speeds = 77mph - 79/80mph (low gps high speedo)
23P High 5 - water skiing

I do have the chine walk situation to deal with over 72 mph. Too much in my estimation. Other Mate drivers have told me to go to a Trophy 4 blade. I am going to do that yet this fall - will give you more info at that time. Plan on 28P, have it labbed for top end.

Boat rides, handles great. I am on a 7,000 acre lake, handles all water conditions very well. Hole shot, good - mid range acceleration realy strong, top end could be a little stronger as I intend on working on that. Skiing is a blast with the high 5. Multiple skiers, single ski starts, etc.

What would I change? Some guys on this site are running 12" set back - might go to that.

I have 1:75 to 1 gears in the standard gear case. Might research going to the 1:62 in the more sleak lower unit?

Power, I did not consider a 300 xs when I purchased the boat. Might rethink that someday, especially if fuel issues are improved with the bigger engine. Don't get me wrong, the 250 Pro XS is great.

now, that sounds like a great setup!!
exactly what id want. now to find it, i unfortunately cannot pony up for a new one so gotta keep my eyes peeled.

have you heard of people running the 300 on the pulsare? i thought SCT had something like that, it ran in the 90s or something.

thanks

love to see pics of your 24 sport again , I remember seeing them a while back and thinking it was pretty sharp. If you decide to let it go let me know. Thanks merc245 :surf:

This is how I'd set up my next Pulsare also. Probably the best combo for all-around use. The only changes I'd make are solid engine mounts, as the solid mounts on my 225 Promax were partially responsible for ZERO chine walk at any speed. The combination of Dual Ride Guide tight steering, solid engine mounts, and labbed Tempest prop were great for killing chine walk. I don't know for sure, but I dont think the 250 XS has solid mounts?

14.5” setback
1” to 1.5” propshaft below pad
300XS with TM case
Sea Star Hydraulic Steering

28 Trophy Plus – 87mph GPS
29 Tempust – 90 mph GPS

The 14.5” seback allows me to run with minimum positive trim….Hole shot and midrange, is still very good.

Chine walk: Very little, none untill about 75mph or more....very little at speeds faster than that.

merc245, Im pretty sure Ill let it go by spring. how soon are you looking to do something. I have the 454/330 on a rack and was gonna put it right back in this winter. could do it sooner with a promising buyer. other than that I have a couple little details to fix, curtain in the cuddy is loose from kids, and trim tab adjustment. I have the repair kit from bennett to install, one side leaks down slowly.
give me your email, Ill send a couple photos.

Craig,
thats sounds real sweet to me!! i thought i heard of someone running the 300 on it.
My enchanter had to have the 15" setback to run too, and with 260hp pulled great to 80-82 but that was it!!

keep your eye out for one for sale!!!!

I went boating with Ray last weekend, what a great looking rig he has.
I'm currently running a 1999 225+ efi on my 21 Pulsare longdeck here's some of my mods:
- 1995 boat
- 12" stainless marine setback w/6" bob's hyd.jack(18"total)
- Bob's lwp + Torque tab added
- 300 heads
- 300 flywheel
- 4 butterfly airbox
- boysen reeds
- ecu recurved by Rapair to 250(6450 rev limit)
- 25p DAH trophy;79mph w/2 people and full tank
Hoping next time out to get the all elusive "80"
Good luck with your setup
Bluehealer
P.S. A 300 or an x is in order someday if i find someone to buy this

Chris, too bad we didn't get a chance to ride / drive each others boat, set up. I'll bet you set back has taken care of most of the chine walk stuff. I feel as though I would like to add more set-back this winter. Have 10" CMC now. Who sells solid plates. Thinking right now 2" to 4" additional. Your thoughts please.

Ray

Craig,

I have 10" cmc hyd. now. Getting a lot of chine walk. Going to try trophy and bravo 1 this week-end. Mate drivers say the 4 blade handles better. I am interested in adding set-back. Your post and others tell me that is part of the "secret" to getting a great driver.

Currently 2" below pad. 1:75-1 gear, 27P Tempest Plus, 250 PRO XS

You are correct,i've eliminated my chinewalk altogether, but i never had this boat with any other setup.By the way i checked my stock of props,a 4-blade 26p yammy, and a 25p mazco HP4,but they are both small shaft 15 spline,so the only prop i've got, that will work foryou, is the 25p DAH Trophy on my boat right now.I've also got some 2' spacers from Bob's if your interested.

Ray, what I have is a 9” static setback bracket from CMC, and a 5.5” CMC hydraulic jack plate between that and the motor. With that much set back you’ll have to install hydraulic steering, because you can’t bend regular cables that tight of a radius with all that setback. You have to really do a good job installing/purging the hyd steering lines to help reduce the chine walk…..I actually still have some chine walk when I get up into the high 70’s, not bad though, very little…..all v-bottoms will chine walk at fast speeds, it’s just a matter of setting up the best you can. The Pulsare is a big enough boat that it won’t really walk at all at slower speeds, say 70 and under. At 90, I have to make slight steering adjustments, not much though.

PM me your email address and I will send you some photos…..

So you guys aren't getting porpoising at slower speeds with that much setback? I found I had to give full negative trim with 13" setback under 35 MPH, especially with passsengers. I dropped back to 11" and found that better but not perfect. I prefer to cruise with neutral trim.

That magic question "what is the best setup"

Tough answer on a 2100br. Basically they all run very well, alot of the performance comes from the driver skill and tweaking the setup. I have done alot of reseach on this and many "trial and error" testing. IMO 10-12" setback with any of the 3.0 L motors is best running either a trophy or tempest. (other props may work but again trial and error) In most cases people with 225's run 25p some step down to 23 for skiing and other 27 for speed.

Personal setup
2006 2100br
2006 225 Pro XS
11.25" Stainless Marine Setback Hyd. with 4 degrees negative trim in setback
Torque Master with 1.75 gears
27p tempest (also 25p as a heavy load prop)
best top speed on GPS 77 (75 with 25p Tempest)
Normal 75-77 on gps

I found the setback helped alot in midrange, with the extra 4 degrees negative trim it will plane at 22 MPH and take off with 6-7 people.

PS. Ray -- that sounds like you hit the setup dead on! Wish I had you 250 pro XS

Mark, yes some porpoise at slower speeds, 25-30, but not bad....if your going to do a lot of slow cruising or skiing/towing, big setback is not a real good set-up, but for top speed get that prop back there so you can run WOT with the least amount of trim.....My porpoise at slow speeds is not bad at all, beside I usually cruise at around 40.
