Pulsare vs Starflight Test

It seems that there has been a debate on these two models for years of which is faster. This past weekend I was able to do some hands on comparison between the following two boats.

Boat #1
2006 Pulsare 2100br with a 2006 225 Pro XS, 12” setback 25p Tempest

Boat #2
Late 80’s Starflight with a 2007 250xs, 10” setback and 25p Fury

Speed…..
Both boats were very close in rigging and setup. On the Takeoff the Pulsare came out of the hole stronger but quickly the Starflight caught up in the mid range. On top he boats were within a 10th of a MPH on GPS. This is with both boats full of fuel and two guys in each boat. Pulsare 73.9 and Starflight 73.8. The day was Hot and humid and agreeably neither boat was running at top potential.

Drivability.
The Pulsare seems to air out faster than the Starflight and also de-accelerates much quicker. The Starflight was much more of a chore to drive at higher speeds as it seem feeling much lighter in the front above 70 MPH.

Summary
Two great boats and an enjoyable day testing.

Nice detail in the comparison. It would be great to see more of this. It would help in the rigging and set up.

That is an interesting comparison.

I agree.

I had a 21' Starliner (open bow starflight) and now have a Pulsare 2100BR, I feel like the Pulsare is an all around faster hull, but I never did any head to head comparisons though.

The Starliner def. took corners better, no real skipping effect.

Maybe I am just subconciously hoping the new hull is faster to justify the purchase!:brickwall:

The best I have seen on my Pulsare (the one we tested with) was 77 flat on GPS. That was in early fall with no gas, bow cover on and a nice ripple on the lake. That day I spun my 27p Tempest @ about 5800.

They say the 250 should pull close to 80 every day on the Pulsare and low 80's on a perfect day.

Honestly I think the starflight tested has a few more MPH's in it if we swapped to a tempest prop. I have not heard much about the Fury but I know for a fact the tempest works great on these SOB.

I think their may be one more day of testing required.

Very interesting!
The big difference between the 2 hulls of course is the Pulsare has a flat pad as opposed to a V-pad. The only way the Starflite might be as fast with he same power would be 5" more setback. It just seems like it is a harder hull to air out.
The Starflite hull is amazing in the turns...pulls a 180 like a Seadoo jet boat.
Next time see which one is faster in a big chop.

If you guys want to get a real kick in the pants, trash the Tempest and try a Trophy Plus 26/27. Your acceleration and out of the hole performance will be incredible, you'll carry heavy loads at lower rpms, your top end will remain the same (maybe even increase), the handling will improve greatly and when the hull hits the pad it will feel like you just hit the afterburners!!!:thumb:

Except in my experience with my Pulsare. My worked Tempest outperformed the stock Trophy Plus in every aspect, from hole-shot to top end.

Just goes to show you that setup has alot to do with prop performance. I know on my Pulsare Longdeck, running 7.5" of setback, hyd. Bob's Jackplate, hyd. steering, Merc 3.0 liter 225Xri...I've tried a Tempest Plus 25,26,27. The 25 handled terrible, the 26 was ok but still a challange to drive above 70mph, the 27 was too big and a dog out of the hole. I also tried a Merc DAH Chopper 26 and 28. The DAH 26 was a great prop (till I nipped off a piece of one ear) all around with good topend, the 28 was great through the midrange and topend. I also have an Quicksilver Offshore 23 four blade..it's the best load carrying, out of the hole prop I've got for skiing and taking 4 people on board...however, it hits seems to hit a wall at about 66mph...now, my Trophy Plus 26 pulls strong out of the hole, the midrange is great and I can hold the boat at wide open thottle at 73-74 mph with small corrections to the wheel!! One of these days, I'm gonna spend the money for the Sea Star Pro Allison ram to match my Sea Star Pro Helm and end my handling goblings once and for all!!!

I have tried a 26 and 27p Trophy and was not that happy with the results. It seemed like I needed more trim to carry the bow. However the hole shot was great. Personally I have no issues with the tempest and find that their is about 1 mph diff between the 25 and 27 on a average day. On a perfect day the 27 is hands down faster with no load.

I have a line on a Boger 27p Trophy that I have been wanting to try for a couple of months. Apparently this prop spins like a 25 or 26 and should be 1-2 mph faster than a stock 27.

Please keep us informed on this "Boger". I have no idea what that is, but I do have a standard 27P T-Plus that I would love to spin like a 26. If "Boger" is some type of prop guy please give me the info.

Thanks in advance.

I think to get a better comparison you would have to have the starflite setup a bit better. If by chance that was a CMC there is noway it was set up rite, I tried ever single possible set up with a 10" CMC it just doesnt work on that hull it starts out way to flat. I added spacers as well it just burries the motor the starflite need 12" to air out properly I realize it would be less with a 3.0 liter vs my yamaha 225 I ran. If it was possibley a rapid jack or equivilent style that would be certainly be better.I tried countless props including tempest, and ended with a 25 trophy plus nothing could touch it for all around, the 13 3/4 diameter allows it to spin and the for blade gives it the blade area need to carry the bow. With 12" and a bone sotck 1987 yahama 225 I was at 74.3 gps. :cheers Aaron
