Pulse Owners - I'm getting prop headache!

So I'm here to ask the "already been there guys"

On your Pulse hull in terms of 3 bld wheels anyone tried both the OMC Raker and Merc Laser prop on their Rude/Johnson powered Pulses?

Trying to determine if I'm gonna buy a hub kit to ry out a Laser or Trophy plus, as I'm just not quite totally happy yet with any of the OMC props I've tried to date including the Renegade, Raker, Cyclone.

The laser is not the best prop, I would NOT recommend it.

I think you will find that a Trophy Plus or Tempest Plus will work well on your set up. Remember that you can "tune" the hole shot with both of those props by changing the size of the vent holes. You will also find that the Tempest Prop likes to be run a little higher it will throw the boat around a little more if run too low. The big blades let it carry weight and get more of the gearcase out of the water.

Personally, I like the Tempest Plus a little better.

I was planning to try my 26 Laser on my dad's Pulse- do they just not have enough blade to get the right amount of bow lift on the Pulses because they're heavier?

What was wrong with the Renegade? I found it to be a great prop on my Mate.

xsive is correct on the props. Mercury makes the best props that's were omc kind of dropped the ball. The guys running the new E-tecs are using mercury props, hopefully bworner will chime in. I'm thinking about trying a mercury prop myself. I do know that omc props need to be worked to get them to perform.

Just from my MERC experiance, I am running a 23p laser II, it likes to run DEEP. (6" below). And the hole shot is good, If I get it to high it tends to drop the bow. BUT,I can still get to about 65 with it. But definitly not ideal for this boat though. I would try that tempest if you can get a tester.

I have a laserII works well for all around, but I bought a turning point classic 4 blade from boatman a couple years ago and LOVE IT.... Tried a tempest and thought it was to squirelly

What pitch Laser fifty? And what's your setback? I thought I saw you post that already, but couldn't find it when I went back to look.

i had a 21p laser ll ,it was on my pulse when i got it. fastest but not the best by farfor my wants/needs. i've played w/ 21p trophyplus,23 tempest,23p 5blade ,20p alpha 4 alm. oddly enough the last 2 on the list are my usual props i run !:rof:best all around low plane speed, etc.i want to try a lesser pitched 5 bld ?

I do like the Renegade for all around handling and performance but it does take more in arm strength vs the 3ble Raker. Remember, my daughters are learning to drive this boat as well and the Raker requires quite a bit less muscle input (in turning the boat) vs the 4bld even though I have hyd steering.. I'm having a heck of a time finding a used 21P 15 spline as well in the Renegade. The 23P I have lightly loaded will only spool up to 5400-5450 and I'd like to see 5700-5800 lightly loaded ideally.
The Raker seems to want to blow out more then I care for and of course the hole shot is not as good as the Renegade.

You might want to consider hydraulic steering if wheel torque is an issue for smaller drivers.

You might want to consider getting a torque tab, I know mine also had some steering torque even after I got the hyd steering and eliminated it and really helped the handling of the boat, it also would crab to the right when on the pad and it doesn't do that anymore either, it was by far the best 20 bucks I ever spent on the boat. My wife and mother-in-law drive for me when I'm skiing and I haven't heard any complaints from them since I added it.

Yup, torque tab is the way to go. Also try different engine heights. Often at the right height torque disappears.

I have hyd steeing and the torque tab already.

I think I'll go ahead and get the Merc prop adapter for the Etec and try a couple of their props. It looks to me as if the Trophy + has less blade surface then the Renegade so I will also see if I can't get my hands on one of them.

I found this to be very true. An inch too high or low and the steering torque goes up. Also, trimmed right helps. When I'm jacked and trimmed right, I can steer with one finger at 40-50 mph.

As far as props go, I had a lot of trouble driving a Yamaha T1 (similar to a Tempest Plus from what I understand), as it chine walked bad over 70. It may be that I just suck at driving, but I've had much better luck driving a Hydromotive and a TXP OT4 (both 4 blade).

The previous owner tried a bunch of other props on the boat, but I don't have his notes with me at the moment. I do remember his results with the Trophy Plus weren't good.

I wonder how well a Revolution 4 would do. Many people have said the Tempest Plus would give the best top speed on a Pulse, but the stability is poor. The Rev 4 is supposed to be the exact same blade design as the Tempest, but in a 4 blade.

Wel l put the Renegade back on and may be getting closer to my corrct propshaft height as it did seem to steer a bit easier. It is a very good prop for towing with and holds well in the turns. I just need to fine tune it possibly, and find one in a 21Pto get the RPMs up.
I'm not happy with the Raker for a all around prop so I doubt another 3bld is gonna be much better.
The Rev4 is a great prop but not one for strictly bow lifting as it seems to lift the stern on other applications I've tried that prop on. I ran one on my 288 Sunsation which also runs on a pad and hated it, but ran one exclusivly on a 230sx Stingray I had and it was a awesome prop on that hull. I'd be shocked if anyone had sucess running it on a pad hull.
