How can I strip my drive to repaint it? can I tape everything off and lightly sandblast it? what kind of paint needs to go back on?

i would not sand blast unless you are going to rebuild it

scuff with sand paper and repaint with merc outdrive paint (spray can)

or interlux epoxy 2000 (expensive)

just make sure to tape off real good

I was wondering because the paint is pealing off in spots and want it to be smooth so I was going to use some glass bead or some other gental stuff ive used on car panels before.

the housing is heavy enough aluminum for sand

the seals are not

i would not chance blowing somthing past one of them

Blast It

Just be creative with your taping and careful with the angle of the the blasting nozzel. You'll have a much better surface for the new paint to adhere to. If its worth doing, its worth doing right.

Merc has a procedure for painting it. The materials are expensive, because you have to buy pints and quarts of this and that, but it will come out nice. Do a google search on it. I painted my drive this year with DP-40 primer and Merc phantom black (laid on thick) and the results were so-so. The spare drive I am putting together will be powder coated after chemically stripping it, which is a huge PITA. I would never Blast a housing, as It would be really hard to get it all out-bearings and blasting media do not mix.

Use an air driven detail sander oh about 1.5 inches in diameter. You can start off rough which will tack the paint off done to the aluminum. Then begin to lighten up with the grit until your using what looks like a 3M pad. This will also allow you to get into the small areas.

Definatly use the Mercruiser paint. But follow the directions. Most of these types of primers and paint most be applied with in one hour (give or take) of each other, or you'll have to wait a week to recoat.

If your doing the water pump you'll at least be able to bench sand the lower unit vs. climbing under the out drive.

Good Luck, its a good week end project.
