Resto aftermath: Some small things that haven't held up

Haven't been here much since I finished my resto. I thought I'd report back on a few small things that didn't hold up the way I'd hoped. Maybe it'll help someone.

  • I filled in my screw holes with Marine Tex. Several holes "caved in" within months, and recently one of the Marine Tex fillings actually popped out. When I filled my speedo tube hole a couple of years ago I decided that since the boat was made of vinylester it made sense to fill it with vinylester. I mixed it with cabosil. That repair is indistinguishable from the surrounding area. So I filled the popped out hole with it also.
  • I used Nautolex on the cabin floor, bulkhead and cockpit sides. It looks great. However, the sides just won't hold. They keep peeling down from the top. I've tried 3M 80, 3M 77, contact cement and Nautolex adhesive. I think I'm going to try the 3M 80 again because that lasted the longest and I'll find some strong tape to run along the top edge where you can't see it. The Nautolex on the bulkheads is wrapped over the top, so that's why it doesn't fall. Don't expect vinyl cleaner to work well on Nautolex. But Purple Power does a great job.
  • I rolled Pettit Easypoxy on the hull and deck, and sprayed the cockpit using a Preval, then wet-sanded. Most places still look decent, but it is a little duller in places, both in the sprayed and rolled areas. It also seems to hold winter stains from water running down the sides off the cover. Takes a lot of buffing to get it out. In my resto thread I mentioned that I'd spray instead of roll the next time. I think the finish would have been a lot more consistent. If I paint it again down the road, I might blast off all the single-stage paint and use gelcoat or Awlgrip.

If you can't use a spray gun and apply contact cement for the carpet use a heavy coat of 3m 90.. The 80 and 77 is for temporary bonds and is not as strong as the 3m 90.. I get it at homedepot and it holds vinyl great also works for headliners, coat both the carpet and the side your gluing to,a good heavy coat, let it dry for a couple minutes and then spray a coat on the side and place the carpet rub it down good and you should be set.

they make an glue just for carpet and its the the stupp :thumb: cheep and it goes a long way its also water proof. I love 3m for a lot but as you found out all of those are made for "light" use. lowes or the depo sell it in a plastic bucket under several names but its all a thick glue I took a plastic spreader and cut 1/8 slots in it to spread it down on the floor and carpet in different directions then just let it set up. ask anyone in whatever store you go to. the bayliner I did is on its 3rd year and its still going strong. good luck and I love the work you did im getting deep in my eluder now and wow what a well built boat.

Thanks for the ideas on the glue. Boat's in the mechanic's hands right now. Unwrapped it from winter storage (damn raccoon ate a hole in my cover and tracked up the inside) and can't get the motor to turn over. No juice for some reason, and I just don't have the time to track it down. Thought it was just the battery at first because nothing worked, but I charged it up and now everything else works. I tried starting it with the charger on Start and still nothing.

Oh, I forgot, one of the side panels that had embedded fender washers glued to wood with 5200 didn't hold. After checking thistothat.com, I'm going to try Marine JB Weld.
