Sam I am's 89 Starliner Take II

Sam I am

Well-known member
Help me. I have a sickness. I'm addicted to these Checkmates. Anyway, I bought the boat. It's not as nice as the Winnipeg boat in regards to the Gel or the Interior. But is has a 225, solid floor, 2 stress cracks on the whole boat that I could find. Trailer is very solid, but has superficial rust. Brand new factory mooring cover. Boat drives like a dream. Steers much easier than my Pulsare. You can see on top of the transom where the steering arm has gouged the top. Not sure how to repair that. Ski pylon. 21P Stainless 3 blade. All stereo equipment. Nice stereo with 6 speakers and a sub. Actually doesn't sound bad at all. No ZZ Top cassette though. They guy would not budge on the price. Not a penny. This boat really fits my needs. I can pay for it outright. It will get me on the water. It's a Checkmate AND a Starliner.

So where to from here? The project boat is already sold to a board member. I'll let him tell his own story.

The 08 Pulsare will be sold. Hopefully this fall so I don't have to store it or keep paying for it. Anyone interested...PM me. I'm pretty motivated. Hint, hint JW.

Here's the pics. That's not me in the boat...I'm way sexier than that.

That's a nice liner you bought Sam!!!!:thumb: A little watersanding and buffing will bring that gelcoat back to a shine on the deck.:D

that is a great boat!! enjoy and maybe your daughter will forgive you when you sale the other boat!

Sam, gotta say I don't get it....

You were restoring yours to make it exactly how you wanted, some plans for it or running.as is?

Yeah...I thought about this one a lot. I've really gotten into the Bass, Walleye and Muskie fishing. I don't have a boat for that so I keep using my Dad's. He's cool with it, but it's not mine and it's too small for the big water around here on a windy day. So, I really wanted a fishing boat. I can't afford 2 boats like my Pulsare and a nice fishing rig. And after looking at numbers, I couldn't afford my restore and a fishing boat either. But...I can afford a solid Starliner and my fishing boat. So...I'm compromising on the checkmate front, but getting my cake and eating it too on the fishing boat front.

Only thing I could see doing to this boat is wet sanding the gel this winter. That's it. It runs great. It looks very stylish. Down the road if I get a hair up my you-know-what I might repaint the trailer during the summer.

This boat is bought, paid for and will give me a lot of CHEAP thrills for many years.

Here's a Big Ol' Bucket Mouth my oldest and I caught the same night we bought the new Starliner...must have been my lucky day!

Another big reason was time. I thought I was going to be parting ways with my flying gig this winter, but it turns out work is still cool with it. So...I need to take a military course called JPME this winter that I'll be doing independent study over the internet. If I were to go to War College in New Port, R.I. this next year I would walk away with a Masters Degree, but since I'm on my own, the amount of time I'll have free for garage work this winter just went down the crapper.

I really like the color combo! Congrats.

Yeah...I've never seen that blue as the primary color on a mate before...it will be relatively easy to wet sand as there are no snaps in the hull. The square footage will probably wear my shoulders out though!

I love it... and you stole it at that price. A resto is a crazy expensive proposition and then you can never get your money out pf it.

I really would have bought it if I had found it first.

Speaking of fishing, I have 3 boat and like fishing out of the Starliner. It feels like a big bass boat in a way.

lol...as soon as I posted the ad I thought, "That might have been a mistake..."

Anyway, I'm thrilled. All things considered, this boat is no where near as nice as the Winnipeg boat, especially when considering the trailers. Man...the Winnipeg liner was fine. Too bad the floor was soft.

Roger. Good thinking, covering both bases at the same time. Family, no matter the size is #1. It's great to have options!

I'm glad it worked out for you Sam, it's a sweet boat and I was planning on going to get it if you didn't want it.

My boats going on Kijiji in the spring and I'm gonna wait for something to come up, a liner or a 2100 BR, need something bigger and I want a newer motor, my old 220 works good but it's a pig on fuel and it should be in a museum.

Dad and I have also talked about a tri-toon with a 300, not sure yet

So is it in Fargo for viewing?

No. I don't have it yet. The guy who showed me the boat was the owner's brother. Not sure, but I think the owner works in the oil fields out in ND. Anyway, his hitch isn't done until Sept 4th and the title is locked up at his place. They had list the boat Thursday night. I saw it friday night and bought it Saturday morning. They were shocked it went that fast, especially since it's fall. So, we put it back in the barn and i'll pick it up the 4th. So, I'll bring the rest of the money and he;ll bring the title and we'll finalize the deal.

Boat looks great Sam! Don't worry about the wet sanding, just take off all the stuff on the deck and it will go much easier. I would say it took about 2 hours for each grit I used to do the deck. It took me about a week spending a couple of hours a night on it.
