sbc marine oil pan

That old omc drive does not have the hydrodynamics to gain much speed or the prop options to gain much speed. Im not a betting man but i would be willing to place some money on the table that if someone were to built 2 identical motors and put them in 2 identical boats and put your drive behind one and a stock alpha behind the other the alpha could be setup to run 5 plus mph faster easily..

As the only other owner of a Checkmate with an old OMC drive on this board, I resemble that remark, or rather my boat does.

Not sure about if the loss of speed is hydrodynamics, but I do know that there is not enough total trim range. You can shim the front of the motor 3/4-1" to get a better hole shot for pulling tubes and wakeboards and keep the bow down while doing it but loose 7-10mph or you can run it flat on the stringers and gain back about 7mph for a top speed around 62-3, or you can shim the back of the motor 3/4-1" and go almost as fast a Merc leg 65-66mph but even with full tirm in the bow will ride rather high pulling a tube or two. And 300hp is all it can take. If any of this was different I would have done it.

I like when people have a imagination.Nice look on these boats, just not worth filling in the hole, and doing the swap.Plus i want to learn about the stringers, and rebuild this one, soon won't no one touch them, and even look at them for work,so a nice trade, ill buy every stringer outdrive i see for 100 or less.I figured i would find out the difference in the marine vs auto,so ill know how to mod,but guess the answer is buy marine, thats ok it can be done the engineers did it.I can see site like iboats asking silly questions, thats one reason why alot of sites go dead, because people think users waisting there time, and all sudden last post is like year ago.Thats why i like sites like this, not saying its dead, but not overloaded with 1,000's of posts,so people may be board and answer.

I feel what your thinking is and my .02 is look for the right parts used if doing a budget build.
You can save alot and have the right stuff. make posts looking for what you need. Guys have tons of "stuff" laying around they will part with.
